5 Best Toyota Cars and SUVs in U.S. News’ Rankings
Toyota has a reputation for building durable, high-quality cars, trucks, and SUVs. Its lineup is populated with top-rated vehicles in every category, including many in U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 rankings. The Toyota Avalon won Best Large Car for Families and Best Large Car for the Money for the fourth year in a row. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid took Best Hybrid SUV and Electric SUV for Family honors. Finally, the Toyota Camry Hybrid was a finalist for several awards, including Best Hybrid and Electric Car for the Money and Best Hybrid and Electric Car for Families.
Using U.S. News’ list, we put together the five best Toyota models based on U.S. News’ overall score. All of these vehicles have won awards and are among the top vehicles in their classes.
1. The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid ranks as the best new Toyota
- Overall Score: 8.7/10
If you’re shopping for a midsize hybrid family car that doesn’t look like a rounded block of cheese, you can’t go wrong with the Toyota Camry. Named a finalist in U.S. News’ 2022 Best Hybrid and Electric Car for the Money and 2022 Best Hybrid and Electric Car for Families, the Camry Hybrid offers all of the goodness of the regular Camry with up to 53 mpg.
In addition to excellent fuel economy, the hybrid powertrain offers quick and smooth acceleration. It balances performance with a quiet, comfortable ride, making it a nice place to pass the miles. U.S. News thinks the Toyota Camry Hybrid “is worth serious consideration” and should be near the top of your list.
2. The 2022 Toyota Avalon Hybrid is a large sedan with plenty of space
- Overall Score: 8.5/10
If you want a Toyota Camry Hybrid but need something bigger, the Avalon may just be your ticket. It’s spacious, well-appointed, and offers plenty of room and a large cargo area. U.S. News ranks it as one of the best cars in its class and named it a finalist in their 2022 Best Hybrid and Electric Car for Families.
The Avalon boasts all of the attributes that make the Camry stand out, including competent performance, a comfortable, quiet ride, and plenty of features. The Avalon Hybrid is also good with gas, getting up to 44 mpg.
3. The 2022 Toyota Avalon shares many qualities with the hybrid model
- Overall Score: 8.3/10
Much of what was said about the Toyota Avalon Hybrid can be said of the regular Avalon. Unlike the Avalon Hybrid, the regular Avalon took two of U.S. News’ awards for 2022, including Best Large Car for the Money and Best Large Car for Families.
Like the hybrid model, the 2022 Toyota Avalon impresses with its Lexus-like features, roomy upscale interior, comfortable seats, and large trunk. It’s motoring in the classic sense of the big family sedan. Unfortunately, like many of the classic family sedan nameplates before it, the Avalon is headed out to the pasture after 2023.
4. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is the best new Toyota SUV
- Overall Score: 8.1/10
Toyota’s 2022 RAV4 occupies the sweet spot of small crossovers, offering room for five people, room for cargo, and good fuel economy of up to 35 mpg on the highway. Like its Toyota siblings, it’s quiet, comfortable, and should offer years of dependable service.
Unlike other Toyotas on this list, the regular RAV4 didn’t win any awards or was a finalist for anything in 2022. But don’t let that deter you from looking at it. It’s still one of the best small SUVs on the market.
5. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a fuel-efficient SUV
- Overall Score: 8.1/10
The big benefit of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid over the standard RAV4 is fuel economy. The hybrid model gets up to 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. But like the regular RAV4, it offers room for five people and plenty of space for cargo. The cabin is upscale, with an easy-to-use infotainment system and plenty of features.
The RAV4 Hybrid also went home from the U.S. News awards ceremony empty-handed. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a winner. As hybrid SUVs go, it’s still hard to beat with its combination of room, features, and great fuel economy.
