Winter can be a rough time for driving. Not only can the cold damage your car, but icy roads can cause your car to crash. Plus, it’s just plain uncomfortable to be cold while driving. However, there are cars out there that can handle harsh winters, such as New England ones, with ease. Here are five of them.

Tesla Model S 

With the all-wheel drive option, the Model S is a great car for the New England winter season. According to U.S. News, it’s one of the safest cars on the market, so even if the hazardous conditions cause an accident, you’ll have a good chance of staying safe inside your Model S.

On top of that, the Model S is an electric car, which means that it’ll be cheaper to run and it’ll be better for the environment than other cars. However, as it starts at about $70,000, it’s a very expensive car, so while it’ll perform well in the winter, it might not perform well for your bank account.

Honda CR-V 

The CR-V is one of the best SUVs on the market today, and unsurprisingly, it’s also a great SUV for New England winters. Although all-wheel drive isn’t standard, it’s not a costly option, especially when you consider the starting price tag. 

According to Car and Driver, getting all-wheel drive for a CR-V will cost about $1,300. At a starting price tag of about $25,000, the CR-V provides drivers with an affordable and well-balanced SUV that’s great for not only winters but every other season as well. 

Jeep Renegade 

A smaller and more affordable SUV, the Renegade provides drivers with a very capable winter vehicle. With the all-wheel drive option powering its all-terrain tires, the Renegade is a great winter car for both commutes and for off-roading. 

Starting at a price of about $20,000, the Renegade also features other options for winter driving like heated seats. Like the CR-V, the Renegade also has fairly good seating and cargo room. 

Chevrolet Equinox 

Another compact SUV, the Equinox is another great and affordable SUV that doesn’t mind the cold. Even without all-wheel drive, it’ll provide drivers and their passengers with a smooth and comfortable ride, according to U.S. News. 

Of course, adding on all-wheel drive will make the Equinox an even better winter vehicle. Another great winter feature that it has is remote start, which will allow drivers to warm up the Equinox before getting in. 

At a starting price tag of $24,000, the Equinox is also pretty affordable for drivers. And of course, like the other SUVs on this list, the Equinox has a lot of other safety and comfort features that make it a great SUV for every season of driving. 

Volkswagen Atlas

One of the best cars for winter driving according to U.S. News is the VW Atlas. Like the other SUVs on this list, it has a lot of great features that make it ideal for winters. 

Unlike other SUVs on this list, it’s a little on the larger side, as it does have three rows of seats. Those extra seats allow the Atlas to provide a comfortable ride to more people than other cars on this list can.

All-wheel drive is an also option that’ll make the Atlas great for winter driving. But on top of that, the Atlas also features a snowy driving mode setting that’ll make driving in winter conditions easier. 

Furthermore, the Atlas has heated seats in the front and rear rows and the steering wheel is heated as well. This allows the Atlas to keep the whole family warm, even in the New England winters.  

The Atlas is a little pricier than the other SUVs on this list, as it starts at about $31,000. But considering all the features it has, it’s still fairly affordable.
