Car theft is a growing concern, with a notable increase in incidents over the past year. Thieves are becoming more sophisticated, making it essential for vehicle owners to be vigilant. Here are the top five things thieves look for before stealing a car and how to protect your vehicle.

Visible valuables

Thieves are attracted to cars with valuables in plain sight, such as laptops, mobile phones, and handbags. Even small items like gym bags, loose change, and phone chargers can entice thieves. Keep your car clutter-free to prevent break-ins and store valuables out of sight, preferably in the trunk or glove compartment.

Poor lighting and parking choices

Thieves prefer poorly lit, secluded areas where they can work unnoticed. Always park in well-lit, busy areas, and use your garage if you have one. Parking near surveillance cameras can also deter thieves, as the visibility of a camera can make them think twice before attempting to steal a vehicle.

Unlocked doors and windows

A surprising amount of car theft occurs because the vehicle was left unlocked. Always lock your doors and fully close your windows, even if you’re just stepping away for a minute. Activate your car alarm if you have one, as it can alert you and others nearby of a break-in attempt.

Keyless entry exploits

While keyless entry systems are convenient, they can also be vulnerable. Thieves can use relay devices to capture the signal from your key fob and unlock your car. To combat this, keep your key fob in a signal-blocking pouch or a metal container when not in use, and consider disabling the keyless entry feature if possible. Store your key fob in a central location within your home, away from doors and windows, to minimize the chances of the signal being captured by a thief outside.

Lack of additional security measures

Factory-installed security systems are a good start, but adding extra layers of protection can significantly enhance your car’s safety. Consider installing a steering wheel lock, an aftermarket alarm, or a GPS tracking device. A vehicle immobilizer can also effectively prevent the engine from starting unless the correct key or fob is present.

Addressing these vulnerabilities can significantly reduce the risk of car theft.
