5 of the Fastest SUVs That Leave Competitors in the Dust, According to TrueCar
The SUV market has expanded significantly over the last few decades. These cars are suitable for a wide range of drivers because each one generally has better cargo space and seating area than smaller sedans. However, speed is one area where SUVs usually don’t stand out.
The average SUV can hit 60 mph in about 7-8 seconds, though larger SUVs are typically slower. There are a few exceptions to the rule, many of which you’ll find in the luxury and electric segments. Let’s look at the fastest SUVs you can buy today.
5. 2023 Dodge Durango
TrueCar says that the most popular Dodge Durango is the one equipped with the 360 hp V8 and RWD. The Durango also offers two other V8s, one of which is supercharged and packs 710 hp. However, this one is only available for the SRT model, which usually costs upwards of $80,000.
The R/T Premium trim is $20,000 cheaper and offers extra niceties like Nappa leather padding and an upscale Harmon Kardon audio system. All three rows have enough legroom and headroom to accommodate most adult passengers, and front-seat riders enjoy heated seats. Gas mileage predictably isn’t the best, giving you an average of 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
4. 2023 Porsche Cayenne
According to Porsche, the Cayenne with the base turbo-V6 can reach 60 mph in just under 6 seconds. The Cayenne S is one second faster, powered by a twin-turbo 434 hp V6. The other three trims offer a twin-turbo V8 under their hoods, which makes 626 hp in the Turbo GT model.
When equipped with the Sport Chrono package, it produces 631 hp and can hit 60 mph in a mere 3.1 seconds. The Porsche Cayenne is also available as a PHEV that gets between 13 to 27 miles of range. The E-Hybrid costs a minimum of $86,500 and can potentially hit 60 mph within 4.7 seconds.
3. 2022 Lamborghini Urus
The Lamborghini Urus is even more expensive, costing an average of $237,721 to start. When Car and Driver tested the Urus, it reached 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. Every Urus comes with a twin-turbo V8 capable of 657 hp and a top speed of 190 mph.
Fuel economy is low at an estimated 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on thehighway. Still, the Urus also offers a pleasing engine note and satisfying handling thanks to carbon-ceramic brakes and a standard air suspension.
2. 2023 Aston Martin DBX
The DBX is relatively more affordable than the Urus and slightly more efficient. Standard models are powered by a twin-turbo 542 hp V8 that promises 14 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. More importantly for thrill-seekers, it also promises a top speed of 181 mph and a 0 to 62 time of 4.5 seconds.
The Aston DBX707 claims to hit 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 193 mph. Aston Martin also says that this model comes with standard Pirelli racing tires and an upgraded suspension.
1. 2022 Tesla Model X
The Tesla Model X Plaid is currently the quickest SUV you can buy, reportedly reaching 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. It also has a whopping 1,020 hp on tap and 333 miles of electric range, though that will naturally shrink under heavy acceleration.
The Plaid models cost at least $20,000 on top of the $122,190 MSRP. Despite its triple-digit price tag, it still doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The Tesla X Dual Motor is also faster than most SUVs, claiming to reach 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. It also gets up to 348 miles of electric range, and its powertrain generates 640 hp combined.
