5 Fastest Trucks of 2022 According to TrueCar
NASCAR drivers and supercar owners aren’t the only ones who want to go fast. Whether you’re driving a Mini Cooper or a heavy-duty truck, you love hitting the gas and tearing up the highway. And if you fall into the latter category, TrueCar has compiled a list of this year’s fastest trucks.
1. 2022 GMC Hummer EV
TrueCar’s full list is 20 trucks long. But if you’re interested in the fastest of the fast, consider a 2022 GMC Hummer EV. It’s little surprise that an EV would make this list because electric vehicles’ inherent design allows them to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph faster than the average gas-powered vehicle. But sustaining those speeds consistently over long stretches is where most EVs fail compared with their gas-powered counterparts. That makes the Hummer EV’s inclusion at the top of this list all the more impressive.
Though it starts at six figures, the 2022 Hummer EV, with its three-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain, can reach 60 mph in 3.0 seconds flat. A MotorTrend road test notes the Hummer EV sustained a 105.4-mph pace for 11.7 seconds. Remember: This heavy-duty model weighs nearly four and a half tons. That speed is lightning-quick for a truck this size.
Driving range is always a question for today’s EVs. But this GMC model can go 350 miles on a full charge, which is quite competitive. Because of its weight, the Hummer EV doesn’t get great fuel economy — an estimated 47 MPGe. However, if you’re looking for one of the fastests trucks of 2022 (and can afford the six-figure MSRP), start with the Hummer EV.
2. 2022 Ram 1500
The 2022 Ram 1500 will also fulfill your need for speed. Don’t expect a 3.0-second 0–60 mph acceleration. But the fastest Ram 1500 model off the line, the TRX, will get you there in just over four seconds. According to Car and Driver, it will also hit a top speed of 118 mph. This four-wheel-drive version packs a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 harnessing 702 hp. And even with this high-end trim, you’ll still pay tens of thousands less than a Hummer EV.
You can also get moving pretty quickly with the 5.7-liter V8, which pairs with either rear-wheel drive or 4WD. This 395-hp engine can hit 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and maintain high speeds for long periods.
You also won’t need to worry about range anxiety. The 2022 Ram 1500 gets a respectable 17/23 mph city/highway with the V8. And though you’ll pay more for gas than you would to recharge the Hummer EV, chances are you won’t be thinking about that much while blazing down the highway.
3. 2022 Ford F-150
Another classic makes this ist. The 2022 Ford F-150 is a perennial favorite for reliability, performance, and towing capacity. That’s why it’s the best-selling full-size truck and one whose options are so comprehensive it’s hard to go wrong.
But how fast is the 2022 Ford F-150? It’s fast enough for police duty. The 2021 models were tested for use by the Los Angeles Police Department. During testing, the Ford F-150s hit 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and 98.19 mph in 14.44 seconds. A separate Michigan State Police test confirmed the F-150’s top speed was 120 mph.
That’s certainly quick for a full-size truck. Based on those tests and interest, Ford has begun deploying specially designed F-150s to police fleets nationwide. And if it’s fast enough for police departments to catch speeders and suspects, the F-150 is worthy of your consideration.
4. 2022 Toyota Tundra
The 2022 Toyota Tundra lands in fourth place on this list. And as Car and Driver notes, its top speed is around 106 mph. That’s not a supercar-worthy number, but it’s pretty fast for the segment.
Like the other fast trucks on this list, the Tundra must balance speed with weight to ensure it can carry heavy payloads and torque to enjoy high towing capacity. As a result, full-size trucks are usually long and heavy. Though they may generate considerable horsepower, their driveshafts aren’t designed or configured to rotate quickly enough to generate super-high speeds because they also must enable high torque levels.
Still, TrueCar gives the Tundra high marks for not only relative speed but also affordability, fuel efficiency, ride quality, and infotainment features.
5. 2023 Nissan Titan
Rounding out the top five is the 2023 Nissan Titan, earning praise for affordability and available options. It’s also the fastest truck in Nissan’s lineup. The 2019 model can hit 60 mph in just seven seconds and enjoys a top speed of 122 mph.
Not only is it a fast truck, but it also handles relatively well and boasts a decent selection of advanced safety and infotainment features. It’s not the most fuel-efficient, but then again, most full-size trucks aren’t. A Nissan Titan EV is reportedly around the corner, which might provide greater mileage for your buck. But until then, the 2023 Nissan Titan is a respectable choice for speed alone.
