Blue-collar work crews that don’t want to sit three-wide in the front have plenty of options nowadays. Four-door pickup trucks are commonplace, but many are luxury family haulers. Luckily, full-size base model 4×4 pickups still come in a work truck spec. Unfortunately, there aren’t any crew cab short bed pickup trucks in the $30,000 range, but the following five are cheaper than the high-priced 2023 Ford F-150.

1. 2023 Toyota Tundra

Toyota places a starting MSRP of $44,710 on their crew cab short bed Tundra SR. Standard features include their all-new 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that puts down 348 horsepower and 405 pounds-feet of torque with the help of a 10-speed transmission. The weight-saving aluminum bed allows for a decent fuel economy of 19 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. Toyota’s base trim package also features a power-assisted rear window to open up the already spacious cabin.

2. 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

For $45,645, potential buyers can step into the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Under the hood, the base WT trim doesn’t come with a V6 but a 2.7-liter I-4 connected to an 8-speed gearbox. Nevertheless, the drivetrain provides an impressive 310 horsepower, 430 pounds-feet of torque, and a combined fuel efficiency of 19 mpg. For those who don’t think it can keep up with the 5.3-liter V8, the turbo-four has nearly 50 more pounds-feet of torque.

3. 2023 Ram 1500

The current version of the base crew cab short bed Ram 1500 will set one back $45,805. With the Tradesman trim level, drivers will have a 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 putting out 269 pounds-feet of torque with a smooth-shifting 8-speed transmission. Fuel economy is a combined 21 mpg. Ram’s base pickup truck provides some of the best interior comfort in the segment, but the upper trim levels host unrivaled luxury.

4. 2023 GMC Sierra 1500

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 PRO trim level in its crew cab short bed configuration has a starting MSRP of $46,445. As Chevrolet’s corporate cousin, it has the same turbocharged four-pot as the Silverado. Also, the base engine comes with the same drivetrain assistance features as the V8. They include a mode for towing and hauling to raise transmission upshift and downshift points and grade braking from the engine to save the brakes.

5. 2023 Nissan Titan

Nissan makes the only full-size pickup truck fitted with a V8 alone. Therefore, the base crew cab short bed Titan S will set potential buyers back a pricier $46,825. It may have a combined fuel economy of just 18 mpg, but its 5.6-liter V8 puts down 400 horsepower and 413 pounds-feet of torque. The 14th-generation Ford F-150 underwent a redesign in 2021, so there aren’t many changes for 2023. The base XL may not have the comfy interior accouterments as the high-priced Platinum, but it’s plenty easy to hose off. Fortunately, Edmunds says the F-150’s climate control system is “effective and powerful,” a welcome commentary for folks working out of their truck in the heat.

Ford’s base F-150 has the lowest maximum towing capacity of any of the pickup truck’s trim levels. However, the 8,200-pound rating in the crew cab short bed is enough to fulfill most daily hauling needs.
