5 Futuristic Vehicles Coming out in 2022 and 2023
If George Jetson was supposedly born this year, where the heck are our flying cars? Given the success of the Terrafugia Transition, there’s reasonable hope that mass-produced futuristic airborne vehicles aren’t too far away. Safety technology is also expanding rapidly. Soon, your car might even be able to read your brainwaves!
Cars in 2022 might not be valid sci-fi movie vehicles yet, but that doesn’t make them less impressive. In fact, quite a few modern cars sport out-of-this-world exterior designs and cutting-edge features. Here are our favorite futuristic vehicles to anticipate in 2022 and 2023.
2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV has a distinctly rounded shape, reminding us of a futuristic flying saucer. The door handles are flush to create a sleek appearance, but thankfully they stay upright when a door is unlocked. At the heart of this vehicle, there’s a 77.4-kWh battery that can produce 225 horsepower and 303 miles of range.
You can also opt for the AWD version, which provides 320 horsepower and 256 miles of range. According to Consumer Reports, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 gives drivers a smooth and quick driving experience. Testers also appreciated that most of the interior was made from eco-friendly components.
2023 Toyota bZ4X
The Toyota bZ4X also sports futuristic appeal with sharp angles and defined body lines. According to Toyota, this EV is the first to feature the automaker’s enhanced e-TNGA platform. Engineers placed the bZ4X’s battery low in the chassis, giving the vehicle better handling and freeing up extra cabin space.
On the inside, the bZ4X looks like a respectable starship cruiser, with a large 12-inch touchscreen and a wide center console. There’s also an additional diagnostic screen displayed behind the steering wheel. Best of all, you’ll be able to enjoy a whisper-quiet ride with enhanced soundproofing glass.
Tesla Cybertruck
Given all of its razor-sharp angles and majorly unconventional design, it’s no secret that the Tesla Cybertruck made this list. It promises to be more powerful than any other EV before it, with 500 miles of range. The tri-motor model will reportedly reach 60 mph in just under 3 seconds.
Unfortunately, the Tesla Cybertruck’s release date also seems to be perpetually in the future. We initially thought that the truck would enter development late last year, but Tesla pushed that back to 2022. Car and Driver discovered that Tesla has since removed a definite production date from the Cybertruck online page entirely.
Kia EV6
The 2022 Kia EV6 makes history as the first model in a new lineup of all-electric models. Its exterior takes on an aerodynamic design, with swooping body lines and a unique rear spoiler containing a light bar. The interior looks far more conventional, but Car and Driver assures us that there are a lot of futuristic features inside.
The floating center console has a lot of thoughtful storage space underneath, and the dashboard is almost entirely digital. Drivers can choose between two drivetrains and batteries. The most powerful Kia EV6, with AWD and the bigger battery pack, boasts 576 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time under 3.5 seconds.
Lordstown Endurance
Here’s another futuristic truck that might look a little more appealing than Tesla’s offering. The Lordstown Endurance retains a mostly traditional figure, though the rounded edges and front end are of undeniably space-age caliber. We also like the slim light bar containing the headlights, which extends back to the cargo box.
This new automaker also promises to integrate a hub-motor system onto this car, which can reportedly generate 600 horsepower. An advanced 4WD system has also been showcased, though real-world races have shown that it can’t handle extreme off-roading just yet. Car and Driver says the Lordstown Endurance will be released for the 2023 model year at an estimated price of $52,500.
