SUV’s are great at going off-road. They’re great at hauling people and stuff. They’re not particularly great on gas. So, a hybrid powertrain makes sense in a big, boxy, SUV. Now that Hybrid SUVs are finally becoming more common, it makes sense that hybrid off-road SUVs with adjustable suspensions, real four-wheel drive capability, and ground clearance are finally coming into their own. These five SUVs are some of the best for tacking your favorite trails in complete electric silence.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the classic Jeep with electric power

Of course, the Jeep Wrangler is one of the best off-road vehicles anywhere. So, why not make it a hybrid? Jeep Wrangler 4xe is features a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Wrangler 4xe can drive in four-wheel-drive full-electric mode. The 4xe plug-in hybrid system on the Wrangler is made up of two electric motors and a high-voltage battery pack paired with a 2-liter gas engine. You can drive in all-electric, e-save mode, or hybrid mode. If its silence doesn’t give it away, you can spot a 4xe in the wild by its two blue tow hooks on the front and rear bumpers.  And, of course, you can still take the doors and roof off.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe brings off-road chops

Jeep’s special edition Trailhawk Grand Cherokee is already well-known off-road SUV. Then, Jeep made it more friendly to the planet it’s designed to traverse. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has a a 2-liter turbocharged engine and two electric motors. Overall, the Jeep has a healthy 375 horsepower. Jeep says the Grand Cherokee 4xe can travel 25 miles under electric-only power. It brings the off-road goods: it has a sway bar disconnect to allow wheel articulation; it has a two-speed trasher case; it can tow up to 6,000 pounds. The batteries are under the vehicle, but of course protected by skid plates. It’s also waterproof, and can ford water up to 24 inches deep. You can get a Grand Cherokee 4xe in Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was the first

Mitsubishi introduced its first Outlander PHEV in 2017. It’s been a standout because it’s inexpensive and can travel up to 83 miles per hour in full-electric mode. The PHEV will start at $36,995 and include a fast-charging system and four-wheel drive. Mitsubishi says the new PHEV will have 370 miles of range while paired with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder motor. It has lower ground clearance and a shallow approach angle, but it’s completely capable in light off-road driving. The Outlander checks a lot of boxes and has become a best seller for Mitsubishi.

Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is the sports car of hybrid off-road SUVs

Why not go fast, save gas, and have some mild off-roading ability? The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid has 455 horsepower from a V6 engine and hybrid motor or up to 670 horsepower with the Turbo trim. It can run on the track with some of the best sports cars. But many don’t realize that a Cayenne Hybrid has a real affinity for off-roading. It has an air suspension that can lift the SUV to 9.4 inches of ground clearance, it has an effective all-wheel drive system, and you can order an off-road package. Unfortunately, all of this capability comes at a price. Cayenne E-Hybrids start at $83,000 and can easily top $100,000 for a loaded version.

Range Rover blends tradition with tech

Range Rover built its reputation on off-road vehicles. The new-for-2022 Range Rover stays true to that, and it includes all-wheel-steering, an air suspension system, and a four-wheel-drive system. It’s also available with mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains. The plug-in hybrid version can go up to 62 miles under electric-only power. But every Range Rover has a locking rear differential and a traction control system. The Rover’s suspension also has up to 45 degrees of articulation. Like the Porsche, it too has an air suspension. In off-road situations, the body can be raised by 75mm and again by an additional 60mm to provide more ground clearance.
