The five new compact hybrid sedans with the best gas mileage guide highlights:

  • Provided its battery is charged, the new compact hybrid sedan with the best gas mileage is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid
  • The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Blue and Elantra Hybrid Blue take the #2 and #3 spots, respectively, amongst compact hybrid four-doors
  • The 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid takes fourth place, while fifth place goes to the 2022 Honda Insight

On their own, compact sedans already know how to sip their fuel. But they can do it even better with some hybrid help. And they achieve this great gas mileage without the sacrifices ‘economy cars’ of decades past made. Yet even within this fuel-efficient fleet, some models stand out for their efficiency. So, if you’re shopping for compact hybrid sedans with the best gas mileage, the cars listed below should be on your list.

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid has the best gas mileage of any new compact sedan when it’s charged

Although hybrids already enjoy better gas mileage than non-hybrids, plug-in hybrids take it one step further. Because they can run on battery power alone, and then recharge using gasoline, PHEVs offer EV-like benefits with fewer drawbacks. And if their batteries are charged, they don’t burn any fuel. Hence why the compact hybrid sedan with the best gas mileage is a plug-in one: the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid.

Like its non-plug-in sibling, the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. But while the PHEV model makes 139 hp, too, it gets a larger lithium-ion battery pack and a stronger electric motor. As a result, the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid has a 29-mile battery-only driving range. And in combined electric-and-gas driving, it gets an EPA-estimated 119 mpge.

Admittedly, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid’s fuel efficiency suffers if its battery lacks charge. On gas alone, this compact hybrid sedan ‘only’ gets a combined 52 mpg, the EPA says. However, that’s still good for a 620-mile driving range. Plus, it has the lowest running costs of any new hybrid.

Unfortunately, if you want one, you’ll have to act fast, because Hyundai is discontinuing it after 2022.

Among non-plug-in compact hybrid sedans, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Blue gets the best gas mileage

Because of that PHEV drivetrain, the Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid technically has the best gas mileage of any new compact hybrid sedan. However, there’s another four-door compact hybrid that beats its battery-discharged fuel economy claims. That would be the base 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, the Blue.

Although all non-PHEV Ioniq Hybrids get excellent gas mileage, the Blue trim is the best of the bunch. It gets an EPA-estimated 58 mpg city, 59 mpg combined, and 60 mpg highway. In comparison, the other Ioniq Hybrid trims get 54 mpg city, 55 mpg combined, and 57 mpg highway. And the Ioniq Blue doesn’t just save you money at the pump—as noted earlier, it’s the cheapest trim.

Sadly for fuel-sipping fans, like the PHEV version, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Blue is going away after 2022. So, if you want to buy one of the most efficient new compact hybrid sedans, the clock’s ticking.

After 2022, the Elantra Hybrid Blue will be Hyundai’s most fuel-efficient compact car

Don’t worry, compact hybrid sedan shoppers, Hyundai will still have something to offer you next year. And if you don’t or can’t wait, you can its future holder of the ‘best gas mileage’ compact hybrid crown, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue.

As with the Ioniq Hybrid, the Blue is the Elantra Hybrid’s base trim. And as with the Ioniq, it’s also the Elantra Hybrid’s most fuel-efficient form. The other trim, the Limited, gets an EPA-estimated 49 mpg city, 50 mpg combined, and 52 mpg highway. However, the 2022 Elantra Hybrid Blue gets 53 mpg city, 54 mpg combined, and 56 mpg highway.

If you’re willing to sacrifice some mpg, the 2022 Elantra Hybrid Limited does have some nifty extra features. It has a larger touchscreen, for one, as well as a digital gauge cluster, 64-color ambient lighting, and leather upholstery. But the Blue isn’t exactly barren, though its interior is excessively plasticky, MotorTrend says. Still, it’s a stylish way to save at the pump.

The #4 small hybrid four-door with the best fuel economy is the 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Although some consider the Prius a compact hybrid, Toyota itself describes it as a mid-size car. Also, it’s really a hatchback, not a sedan, so it doesn’t belong on this list. But another Toyota, the 2022 Corolla Hybrid, does.

Though it’s not the most fuel-efficient Toyota hybrid, the 2022 Corolla Hybrid does enjoy one of the best gas mileage estimates among compact sedans. According to the EPA, it gets 53 mpg city, 52 mpg combined, and 52 mpg highway. And though it’s not quite as efficient as the Prius, it’s noticeably cheaper.

If gas mileage isn’t the only thing on your mind, though, you might want to hold off on getting this compact hybrid sedan. For 2023, the Corolla Hybrid is getting a new touchscreen, upgraded battery, extra safety features, and optional all-wheel drive. That last feature will undoubtedly affect its fuel economy somewhat. However, it’s not a box you need to tick. And the other upgrades will address some of the car’s flaws, MotorTrend claims.

If you want to save gas with the #5 car, the 2022 Honda Insight, you’ll have to act fast

Waiting, though, isn’t an option for the last compact hybrid sedan on this ‘best gas mileage’ list. Just like the Ioniq Hybrids, the Honda Insight is dead after 2022. But you can still save some gas with one before the final one leaves the dealership lot.

Honda offers the 2022 Insight in two trims, and as with the Hyundai hybrids, the base trim is the most efficient. The Insight EX gets an EPA-estimated 55 mpg city, 52 mpg combined, and 49 mpg highway. Meanwhile, the more luxurious Insight Limited gets 51 mpg city, 48 mpg combined, and 45 mpg highway.

Although it’s not the most efficient compact hybrid sedan, the 2022 Insight is “an excellent sedan, period,” MotorTrend reports. Its rear headroom is a bit compromised and its CVT drones a bit, but it rides and handles neatly. Also, it has a plethora of storage space scattered throughout. So, even if it doesn’t have the absolute best gas mileage amongst hybrids, there’s plenty to like about this sedan.
