Sport utility vehicles have become increasingly popular over the past decade in the United States. SUVs outsold sedans for the first time in 2015 and made up nearly half of all U.S. vehicle sales in 2019. The Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling non-pickup truck in America in 2022, with almost 400,000 units sold. Affordable and luxury options abound, but a few stand out for their hefty price tags. Here are the five most expensive SUVs in history, according to Worthly.

1. Dartz Prombron Red Diamond Edition: $1.5 million

In 2010, the Russian tuner Dratz debuted arguably the most expensive SUV, the Prombron Red Diamond Edition. It stands out in a crowd of Toyota RAV4s and Honda CR-Vs but resembles a truck or tank more than a sport-ute. The entire vehicle is bulletproof — including the windows and 22-inch wheels — and boasts ruby-red matte exterior paint and Kevlar coating.

Inside, Rogue acoustic audio and tungsten exhaust systems are impressive. Diamonds, rubies, and white gold adorn the cabin, as does whale penis leather, Worthly reports. This $1.5 million SUV is one-of-a-kind.

2. ‘Warrior One’ Hummer H1: $1.25 million

Though not as flashy as the Prombron, the ‘Warrior One’ Hummer H1 has an interesting backstory. It was unpopular in the early to mid-2000s due to exposure from the War in Iraq. CNN producers and photojournalists used this specific H1 in 2003, according to Barrett Jackson

In 2006, the TV series Overhaulin’ added a six-inch suspension lift, one-off Foose wheels, a custom leather interior, and 37-inch BFGoodrich tires. They also upgraded the sound system with six LCD monitors, 250-pound subwoofers, and 7,500 watts of Kicker audio.

All proceeds from the sale went to the Fisher House Foundation, Worthly says. Re/Max International founder David Liniger forked over $1 million to win the vehicle at auction. An additional $250,000 from David Ressler, the losing bidder, also went to the charity. At the time, it was the first million-dollar charity vehicle.

3. Spyker D8 Peking-to-Paris: $300,000

Departing from the seven-figure peaks of the first two models on this list, this $300,000 Spyker D8 is still one of the most expensive SUVs. Originally called the D12 due to an Audi W12 engine that was later replaced, the Peking-to-Paris debuted at the 2006 Geneva Auto Show. It’s named for the vehicle that finished second in the 1907 Peking-to-Paris rally.

Per Top Gear, Spyker claimed the Peking-to-Paris could zoom from 0 to 60 mph in five seconds flat. The suicide doors and glassy cockpit made for an incredible-looking interior.

4. Lamborghini Urus: $253,395

The first mass-produced model on this list is not only one of the most expensive SUVs but also one of the fastest. Lamborghini debuted the Urus at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show. Now, few luxury SUVs can match the Urus’ performance standards.

It packs a twin-turbocharged V8 harnessing 657 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque and standard all-wheel drive. Car and Driver aptly calls it “a supercar with an SUV shell.” It roars from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and stops equally fast, slowing from 70 to 0 mph in only 149 feet. It also provides 22 cubic feet of cargo space and an easy-to-use infotainment system, all for $253,395, according to TrueCar.

5. Land Rover Range Rover: $219,775

The Range Rover is one of the best-known marques in the luxury SUV segment. Land Rover redesigned the 2023 Range Rover with three powertrain choices. The most powerful is the P530 turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, producing 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.

Buyers get plenty of luxury for the $219,775 MSRP, including an air suspension that automatically lowers the vehicle upon entering. Expect elegant styling and off-road capabilities, too.

Are the most expensive SUVs worth their eye-popping price tags?

Few of us can consider, let alone afford, the world’s most expensive SUVs. They offer novelty that not too many can enjoy. Whether a completely bulletproof vehicle, a battle-tested Hummer H1, or a supercar-inspired family hauler, these SUVs provide an experience unlike any other.
