It’s a great time to take a road trip, but the rising cost of gas prices is enough to keep anyone at home. It’s never fun filling up multiple times on a trip only to feel broke once you get to your destination. As such, here are five of the most fuel-efficient compact cars to take on a road trip.

1. 2022 Toyota Prius – 52 mpg combined

The 2022 Toyota Prius soldiers on as one of the most fuel-efficient cars that you can buy. It gets over 50 mpg in combined driving thanks to its wind-cheating aerodynamic shape and a 121-hp hybrid powertrain. It may not get you there quickly, but the Prius will keep you entertained and relaxed along the way with an available 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a JBL sound system, and a generous amount of passenger room.

2. 2022 Honda Insight – 52 mpg combined

The 2022 Honda Insight may get the same gas mileage as the Prius, but it ups the ante with a normal sedan design. That’s right, if you want your hybrid car to feel more like a regular sedan as opposed to a futuristic spaceship, then the Insight is for you. You better act fast, though, as the Insight won’t be around after the 2022 model year.

3. Chevrolet Spark  – 33 mpg combined

We know, the 2022 Chevy Spark is an odd duckling on this list, but we wanted to give it some love. The Spark is on its way out after this model year as well. However, if you’re looking for a small hatchback that can cruise its way on the highway with a 98-hp engine while netting 33 mpg, then the Spark could light your fire.

4. Hyundai Elantra Hybrid – 50 mpg combined

If you have been considering buying a 2022 Hyundai Elantra and want to squeeze as much fuel economy out of a trip as possible, the hybrid is your best pick. The Elantra Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-liter engine that’s paired to an electric motor to produce a combined 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Best of all, you’ll also get 52 mpg on the highway, which means less pain at the pump.

5. 2022 Kia Niro – 50 mpg combined

To be honest, the 2022 Kia Niro is basically a Hyundai Elantra Hybrid in Kia form. It has the same 139-hp engine and can achieve similar fuel economy figures. However, the editors at Car and Driver were able to achieve up to 46 mpg on the highway in their 75-mph fuel-economy test. With the Kia Niro, you’ll undoubtedly be sailing past gas stations with a big smile on your face.

The most fuel-efficient road trip cars

Whether you’re planning to take a long road trip this summer or just need a car that won’t make you sad during fill-ups, these five cars fit the bill. Four out of five of them can achieve up to around 50 mpg, which is no joke when gas costs an average of $4.20 a gallon. Best of all, they won’t break the bank either.
