We’re enjoying every minute with the new Toyota Tundra and learning more about it every day. There are plenty of great things to say about the 2022 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition, but there are a few drawbacks to consider as well. 

2022 Toyota Tundra: The good and the bad

You can get behind the wheel of the 2022 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition for about $61,090. The Tundra starts at around $35,950, so it costs about $25,140 to upgrade to premium Texas quality. The luxury is definitely noticeable. 

Going for the 1794 Edition adds 20-inch machine-finish alloy wheels, a chrome grille, exterior accents, and a Rich Cream or Saddle Brown interior with American Walnut wood-grain trim. You also get the Trailer Backup Guide with Straight Path Assist. 

1. CON: The 2022 Tundra is thirsty 

We have a Tundra that’s equipped with the i-FORCE 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that cranks out 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. We don’t have the i-FORCE MAX Hybrid with 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. 

The difference is the fuel economy is too hard to ignore. In the Eco Mode, we’re getting about 16.8 mpg. But the hybrid engine gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 24 mpg on the highway. 

2. CON: Visibility is limited

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has massive side mirrors, which are great for seeing the trailer and what’s behind you. However, every time we turn, they create massive blind spots. Smaller vehicles have disappeared from sight while driving around the neighborhood. 

The back window is pretty big, but it’s hard to see past the truck bed—also, headrests in the second-row block portions of the road. Plus, the digital rearview mirror takes some getting used to. 

3. CON: The turning radius could be improved 

It may take a little practice to learn how to park the 2022 Tundra. It has a turning radius of about 24.3 to 26 feet. The Ford F-150 has a 20.6 to 26.25-foot turning radius, and it does feel easier to maneuver in tight areas. 

The new Tundra is longer, taller, and wider than the previous generation, and you can feel the difference. While the extra passenger and cargo space is nice, we miss how easy parking the 2021 model is. 

1. PRO: The Tundra is comfortable 

We could drive the 2022 Toyota Tundra all day. It’s perfectly suited for longer trips because the seats are so well-padded and comfortable. It seems like the seats improve our postures without fatigue. 

The 1794 Edition has leather-wrapped soft-touch surfaces that are comfortable too. The armrests are relaxing and comfy. While the carpet makes us a bit nervous because it could get messy, it feels quite nice as well. 

2. PRO: The tech is improved 

With the 2021 Tundra, the touchscreen was adequate. It worked, but sometimes you couldn’t see the screen in the sunlight. Also, it was small compared to what rivals had to offer. Now the screen is visible at all times. 

The older model didn’t have a wireless phone charger, but now it’s placed perfectly in front of the center console. Plus, the Tundra offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is extremely convenient. 

3. PRO: The camera views are helpful

Even though the 2022 Toyota Tundra is hard to park, it’s easy to correct. Multiple camera views and the 360-degree camera display show you everything around the truck. There are even camera reviews for trailering. 

The backup camera and gridlines direct you where you want to go without hassle, and the parking sensors display where you might come into contact with obstacles. Plus, there is a forward-facing camera which is helpful for off-roading. 

4. PRO: The Tundra is fast and fun 

There are multiple driving modes with the 2022 Toyota Tundra, including Eco, Normal, Comfort, Custom, Sport, and Sport+. The acceleration is a bit sluggish in Eco mode, and the engine is louder. 

However, when you put the truck in Sport+ mode, the suspension tightens up, and the acceleration is noticeably faster. In this mode, the engine has an attractive deep roar. Also, in Comfort mode, impacts on the road are easily absorbed, and the engine is quiet. 

5. PRO: The Toyota Tundra has an excellent interior

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has an incredible interior with a massive panoramic sunroof that allows natural light to filter into the cabin. It opens pretty far to allow the cabin to fill with fresh spring air and to connect with nature. 

Also, the rear window rolls down! We discovered this feature in a drive trough, and my dog Bruce surprised the folks behind us in line. At night, ambient interior lightning creates a relaxing yet modern vibe.
