Think whatever you want about the 2021 Toyota Supra, but it’s a blast to drive and makes for a really good everyday sports car. I know, every enthusiast would rather have the fourth-generation Supra instead to live out their 90s tuner car fantasies. But I would argue that the 2020-21 Supra – also known as the Mk5 Supra – is a far better buy. Here are five reasons why.

1. The new Toyota Supra is cheaper than the old one

The Mk4 Toyota Supra – produced from 1993 to 1998 – is one of the most sought-after JDM halo cars from the 90s. Due to its scarcity and a recent uptick in popularity, many Mk4 Supras are currently selling for close to and around $100,000. That’s pretty ridiculous, but that’s how the market is.

If you don’t have that kind of money to blow on a car that’s nearly 30 years old, then the 2021 Supra should come as financial relief. You can currently purchase a 2021 Supra for around $45,000 to $55,000 depending on the engine that you want under the hood – turbo 2.0-liter or 3.0-liter. That price sounds a lot less ridiculous, doesn’t it?

2. The 2021 Supra has more tech-savvy features

While the fourth-gen Supra is undoubtedly a cool car to own, it’s still a car from the 90s. That means its interior styling and tech features are rather dated. The new Supra, on the other hand, comes equipped with BMW’s infotainment system, an available JBL premium audio system, and enough safety features to keep you alive and well in a crash. The older Supra has two airbags, though, so maybe that counts for something.

3. The Mk5 Supra can be easily tuned for more power

There are plenty of tuners and enthusiasts tuning fourth-gen Supra’s 2JZ engine to the tune of 1,000 hp. However, that kind of power doesn’t come easy as many parts need to be swapped out or fortified to handle the extra boost. The new Supra is much easier to tune, especially if you don’t need 1,000 hp. A company called OpenFlash Performance offers tuning software that can add over 100 hp via a plug-and-play ECU harness. On top of that, other power mods can be added if 480 hp isn’t enough for you.

4. The 2021 model handles better than the old one

While the Mk4 Supra can be modified to handle like a genuine racecar, it’s not that great with its stock suspension setup. According to Hot Cars, there are plenty of videos online that show the Mk4 Supra “wallowing and leaning in the turns.” The Mk5 Supra, however, is made to handle well right out of the box and is comfortable enough for the daily drive.

Want it to handle even better? Then there’s a lot of aftermarket support for its suspension components as well.

5. The new Supra has a warranty

If you buy a 2021 Toyota Supra, it will come with the brand’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which is very reassuring. If you buy an older Supra, then you better be good at wrenching on it because there is no warranty for anything that breaks. Also, keep in mind that it’s an older car, so stuff is bound to break.

The 2021 Supra is a better buy

You can think what you want all day about the fact that the 2021 Supra has BMW parts and therefore isn’t a “real Supra.” But I would argue that it is and in some ways, it’s much better than the older version.
