It’s no secret that Americans love SUVs. A commanding view of the road and off-road capability are just a couple of reasons why. But for those that need something smaller, the compact SUV segment has a strong roster of competitors ready to suit anyone’s needs.

The segment is filled with rivals like the Nissan Kicks, the Kia Seltos, the Hyundai Kona, and Honda HR-V. The latter is typically thought of as the leader of the pack and Hyundai Kona is relatively new, so we figured we would compare them and bring you five reasons why the Kona is better than the Honda HR-V.

Better infotainment screen

The Honda HR-V comes with a 7-inch touchscreen accompanied by a few buttons and volume knob, but the menu can be a little tough to navigate.

The Hyundai Kona, on the other hand, comes standard with a 7-inch screen but has an available 8-inch screen as well. It’s also easy to operate and navigate, thanks to hard buttons on either side of the screen.

Better engine options

The Honda HR-V is powered by a 1.8-liter engine that produces 141 horsepower. It’s a reliable and fuel-efficient engine, but that’s the only choice you get with that car.

The Hyundai Kona, however, is available with either a 2-liter, four-cylinder that pumps out 147 horsepower or a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 175 horsepower. We think it’s always good to have options and it’s nice to see different engine choices to hopefully fulfill everyone’s needs.

Dual-clutch transmission

This one is a little nitpicky, but let’s face it, CVT transmissions can be annoying under heavy acceleration, and that’s what the Honda HR-V has. However, the Hyundai Kona uses a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that offers smooth operation and quicker gear changes.

Better tech-savvy features

While the Honda HR-V does come well-equipped with standard safety features, especially the driver-assist aids in the Honda Sensing package, it doesn’t offer a few things that the Kona does. For example, the Kona is available with a head-up display, a power driver’s seat, and a heated steering wheel, all of which are rare for cars in this segment. We think that Honda could take a page from Hyundai and step it up a little with the features in the future.

Funky styling

As always, looks are subjective. However, applaud Hyundai for going with some really bold styling for the Kona. Love it or hate it, the Kona’s styling will likely wear well with age and it sure makes a striking statement among other bold competitors. The Honda HR-V, on the other hand, has been refreshed once, but it still looks largely the same as it did when it debuted in 2016. Time to step it up, Honda!

Buyer’s choice

These are five small ways in which the Hyundai Kona bests the Honda HR-V, however, we understand that there are other reasons why some may choose one over the other in the end. Either way, just remember that the Hyundai does come with a better warranty as well, and if you do choose the Honda, then you’re still getting a great car.
