The mid-size sedan segment has some really tough competition, mainly because all the cars in it are equipped mostly the same and have similar pricing structures. Despite the similarities, the 2020 Honda Accord leads the pack thanks to its value-packed configuration and Acura-like features. However, prospective buyers shouldn’t count out the 2020 Mazda6.

While the Mazda6 might not win any popularity contests against the Honda Accord, it still has a lot to offer. In fact, here are five ways in which the Mazda6 is better than the Accord.

More torque

While the Honda Accord might have Civic Type R DNA in its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the Mazda6’s turbocharged 2.5-liter engine is potent in its own right. The stout, up-level engine produces 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.

On the other hand, the Accord’s top engine produces 252 horsepower and 273 torque. However, we know that torque is more important for daily driving, so take that, Honda!

Sophisticated styling

Sure, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and looks are subjective. But there’s no denying that Mazda’s Kodo design language exudes some of the best styling cues on the consumer end of the market.

While the Honda Accord’s look is bold, the Mazda6 adds a more modern and sophisticated take on the family sedan.

Agile handling

Ever since its “Zoom-Zoom” advertising spin in the early 2000s, Mazda has injected sportiness into their lineup. Superb driving dynamics have been synonymous with all Mazda products and the Mazda6 is no exception.

Consumer Reports said that the Mazda6 is one of the most engaging family sedans to drive and that the steering response is rapid and there’s little lean in the corners. Those looking for a family sedan that can carve corners and feel somewhat MX-5-like can find in this car.  

Better audio system

While the Honda Accord is available with a 10-speaker audio system, the Mazda6 is available with a Bose 11-speaker premium sound system. Sure, one speaker doesn’t sound like a huge difference, but if you’re an audiophile, then it can make all the difference.

Real wood trim

The Signature trim level in the Mazda6 comes with real wood trim. The trim is actually made from Japanese Sen wood, unlike the fake wood trim that you get the Accord. Yes, we’re nitpicking, but for good reason.

Interior quality is important and it doesn’t hurt that the Mazda6’s interior is also adorned with soft Nappa leather and Ultrasuede lines the doors and the dashboard.

Tough decision

Admittingly, it was really tough finding the ways in which the Mazda6 beats the Accord because the two are so close in comparison. They have nearly identical fuel economy numbers – both get 26 mpg combined – and their pricing variations per trim is almost the same.

Any mid-size sedans buyer literally can’t go wrong with either choice as they both bring about the same type of features and value to the table.

However, if you’re looking for something sporty and driving dynamics is something that is high on your “must-have” list, then the Mazda could be a more clear-cut winner. Driving, aside, it’s a really close race between these two.
