While the full-size pickup truck category has a roster of worth competitors, the Ford F-150 and RAM 1500 have been the top rivals in the segment for a long time. It’s easy to draw comparisons as America’s best-selling truck will likely continue to keep its head above the crowd while the RAM makes changes with every generation to keep up. On that note, the RAM 1500 was redesigned recently and it does show some worthy improvements that might actually prove that it’s better than the Ford F-150. Here are five ways in which we found that the RAM 1500 bests the F-150.

Storage solutions

Sure, pickup trucks are primarily made for hauling and towing, however, having multiple storage solutions is always an added plus. The RAM 1500 comes with multiple storage solutions including the RAM box, which are storage compartments embedded on the sides of the truck that provide ample space for tools and other things. And if you have something heavy or large to haul, you will likely have an easy time getting into the bed of the truck thanks to the handy multi-function tailgate that utilizes a split-door system for a more flexible point of entry.

The RAM 1500 also has convenient storage solutions on the inside as well. Flipping up the rear seat bottom makes it easier to haul large items in the cabin and below that are in-floor storage bins so you store even more stuff, whether it’s questionable in nature, or not.  

More tech-savvy interior

When opting for the higher RAM 1500 trim levels, you’ll be treated to an available 12-inch touchscreen with UConnect 12.0 and navigation. The updated RAM 1500 also features a digital cockpit display and active noise cancellation for a quieter cabin. And you’ll want a quiet cabin, especially if you opt for the Harmon Kardon Premium Audio system that includes 19 speakers for a total output of 900 watts.   

eTorque System

The RAM 1500 is now available with the eTorque system, which utilizes a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to aid with the start/stop function, adding torque for better towing and hauling performance, as well as regenerative braking. It’s an additional option on all the RAM trim levels and considering it also helps with better fuel economy, we would say it’s worth it to check that box.  

A smoother ride

According to U.S. News, the RAM 1500s ride quality is “incredibly smooth and quiet for such a large vehicle, even without the optional four-corner air suspension system.” We attribute that to the RAM’s fully independent suspension that doesn’t use leaf springs and utilizes active dampers as well.

It’s got a HEMI

OK, so we know that the Ford F-150 does have some great engine choices, including a powerful and efficient diesel engine, however, when it comes to RAM, you really can’t beat a HEMI V8. The HEMI V8 engine is rated at 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. But if you want something smaller, then you can get a 3.6-liter V6 engine that pushes out 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. Oh yeah, in case you’re wondering, the RAM does come with a diesel engine, too. That engine puts out 260 horsepower and a tree-stump-pulling 480 lb-ft of torque.

It can pull its own weight

While the Ford F-150 will likely always be the best-selling truck in America, let alone the entire planet, the RAM 1500 has taken great strides in being a great competitor. And while truck enthusiasts will likely always be torn between these two rivals, at least we can say that the new RAM 1500 can definitely pull its own weight in the competition.
