When it comes to vehicle maintenance, performing your own oil change may seem difficult, but it’s easier than you think. Changing your own oil could also save you money, which is also a huge plus, especially if you’re on a budget. If you need more reasons why you should take on the oil change job yourself, here are five top ones:

1. You can always find “how-to” change your oil instructions online

It doesn’t matter if you drive a Ford, Honda, or Jaguar – you can always find oil change directions just by conducting a simple Google search. For example, searching for “how to change your oil” online will bring up many videos and tutorials that are easy to follow. These resources will provide step-by-step directions and let you know what tools you will need to tackle the job confidently.

2. All the tools you will need for the job are easy to find

Once you find out which tools you’ll need and look at your owner’s manual for the correct specifications, you can purchase everything you need. Chances are, if you visit your local auto parts store, they’ll have a wide range of motor oil and filters that will suit your model. You can also buy tools from the hardware store.

3. You know what’s happening behind the scenes

When you bring your car to an auto shop, they might not tell you all the details during the oil change. For example, some local auto shops may use a cheaper oil brand to save money. So, if you perform your own, you will know exactly which type of oil you are putting in your car. You’ll also know what tools you’ll be using.

4. Changing your own oil can save time

If you plan to change your oil yourself, you will save time. When you visit a local shop, you must drive there, wait at least an hour, and then go back home. It’s easier to make a quick stop at the store to purchase your own after work and perform the oil change the next day or the following weekend.

5. The feeling of satisfaction

According to Autoblog.com, “Completing an oil change provides satisfaction on a personal level. Maintaining a machine that you use daily creates a tremendous feeling of accomplishment. It also enhances your understanding of your vehicle and appreciation for its technical complexity.”

Once you master the oil change, you can start taking on other projects, like replacing your brake pads or car battery.

Should you DIY your next oil change?

If you feel comfortable enough to change your oil, we say you should go for it. It’s not as daunting as it may seem. All you’ll have to do is buy the proper tools and look up instructions online. You will end up saving time and money, and you will get the feeling of accomplishment once the job is complete.
