Hondas and Acuras have historically been known for their reliability and easiness to own and drive. However, they’re not typically known for their speed. Sure, there have been many sporty Honda and Acura models in the past, however, they have always been meant more for a road course or autocross track than a drag strip. And while the following five Honda and Acura cars aren’t exactly drag-strip monsters, they all are quicker off the line than most other consumers cars on the road.

1997-2001 Honda Prelude Type SH

Weighing in at over 3,000 pounds, the Honda Prelude was actually considered heavy compared to its stablemates during the time that it was in production. However, its 195-horsepower engine was able to scoot the 6.7 seconds, according to Motortrend.

Couple that with the handling prowess of the Type SH’ Active Torque Transferring System, which acted like a limited-slip differential, and the Prelude was actually more of a pocket rocket than a land yacht.

1997–2001 Acura Integra Type R

Even the most casual Acura observer would probably know what the Integra Type R is. And while it doesn’t need much of an introduction or explanation, we were actually surprised that it was able to pull of 6.8-second 0-60 times back in its day. Keep in the mind that it only had 195 horsepower and it’s 8500 rpm redline meant that it was more comfortable bouncing off the rev limiter than doing quarter-mile sprints.

2010-2017 Honda Accord V6

Would you believe that a Honda Accord could get to 60 mph in about 6 seconds or less? We didn’t either. Until we revisited the Honda Accord V6 that was produced with a six-speed manual transmission from 2010 to 2017.

We found out that it was surprisingly quick for a front-wheel-drive coupe that was more likely to be driven to church on Sunday than a racetrack on Saturday. The stout powertrain has since been replaced by the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with the six-speed manual. However, the V6 engine sounded a lot better.

2010-2014 Acura TL Manual Transmission

How does a 305-horsepower, six-speed-manual family sedan that can pull off 5.5-second 0-60 times sound? Yeah, it sounds pretty amazing to us too. Luckily, it did exist in the form of the 2010-2014 Acura TL that was outfitted with the 3.7-liter V6 engine which sent power to all four wheels via the brand’s Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system. This car was the perfect formula for comfortable performance. It’s too bad no one likes to buy family sedans with manual transmissions.

2000-2009 Honda S2000

It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the S2000 is on this list. Motortrend once noted that the S2000 could go from 0-60 in about 6 seconds, while other sites indicate times as low as 5.5. While it can all be up for debate, the lowest common denominator was that this 240-horsepower roadster was an absolute blast to drive and quicker than other cars in its class.

A dying breed?

This is a pretty short list of quick Honda and Acura cars and we know we left out current all-stars like the NSX and the Civic Type R. However, those cars were meant to be quick. It does make us wonder, though, will Honda and Acura continue to surprise us with unassuming sedans and small sports cars as they did in the past? All we can do is cross our fingers and hope.
