Owning a Chevrolet Corvette can equate to loads of driving fun for many years. Its high-revving, powerful V8 engine, meaty tires, and sporty suspension make the Corvette one of the best sports cars that money can buy. However, there are a few caveats to driving a Corvette every day. Here are five things you should never do in your Chevy Corvette.

1. Don’t forget to latch the roof

One of the coolest features of the Chevy Corvette coupe is the ability to remove the roof panel and store it safely in the trunk. However, many C5, C6, and C7 Corvette owners have reported forgetting to properly latch the roof panel on their cars.

It’s a common mistake because the roof panel sits flush with the weatherstripping when laid down, so taking the extra step and latching the roof shut can be an oversight by the owner. Don’t fall victim to this easy mistake and make sure to latch your Corvette’s roof panel every time. Not doing so can lead to some serious injury to others and damage to your car as well.

2. Don’t leave your key fob in the trunk

The Corvette’s proximity key is a handy feature as it allows the driver to keep the key fob in their pocket or purse and start the car with a push of a button. However, some Corvette owners on various forums have reported getting locked out of the car when leaving the key fob in the trunk area. According to Cars, Costs, and Technology, what happens is that the car passively locks the car and the system can’t detect the key since it’s too far from the ignition switch.

In order to circumvent this embarrassing situation, you can disable the passive locking system by holding down the unlock button on the driver’s side door for four seconds.

3. Don’t fill up the tank using a gas can

If your Corvette runs out of fuel and you need to add a gallon, don’t use the gas van by itself. The Corvette utilizes a capless fuel filler, which necessitates the use of a funnel in order to fill it via a gas can. Failure to use this funnel can result in gas spilling all over the car’s fender and wheel.

4. Pull forward into a parking spot

This tip might seem arbitrary considering we park our cars by pulling forward into spaces all of the time. However, almost every generation of the Corvette features a lowered stance and some even have a front lip. That lip, in addition to the car’s front bumper, can be easily damaged when pulling forward into a spot. The remedy? Back into every parking spot like you’re at a car show. Your Corvette’s bumper will thank you later.

5. Avoid putting large or uncapped drinks in the cupholders

Sure, the Chevrolet Corvette is a driver’s car through and through, so you shouldn’t really be eating or drinking anything while sitting in it. However, if you must have a drink in your Corvette, then make sure it has a cap or is at least small enough to fit in the car’s shallow cupholders. Otherwise, the drink can easily topple over and spill everywhere.

Owning a Corvette is fun, but there are a few precautions

While owning any generation of the Chevrolet Corvette can come with years of tire-shredding fun, there are a few things that you should be aware of. Admittedly, these tips laid out here are rather small in the grand scope of major issues that can occur during the time you own your Corvette. But they’re still important to be aware of.
