Routine oil changes are an important maintenance service that can help keep your vehicle running in tip-top shape. Changing your oil regularly will provide your car with better MPG, an improved engine life, and, most importantly, a more efficient engine.

So, what does an oil change include? Whenever you schedule an oil change, whether it’s at the dealership or a local service center, the engine oil and filter are both replaced. The technician will drain the oil motor oil and replace it with fresh, clean oil.

But is that all you need to know before your next oil change? Here are five key factors to consider before you schedule your next oil change.

1. The quality of work

You shouldn’t just trust the nearest shop near you to get an oil change. Instead, you will want to take the time to research a service center that produces high-quality work, says iSeeCars.

And although an oil change seems like an easy task, quality should always come first. For example, there are some retailers out there who offer oil changes at a discounted price. That may sound great to most people, but these places usually don’t specialize in automotive work.

2. Let’s talk about the price of an oil change

You will want to consider price before scheduling your next oil change. Finding a place with cheap oil changes isn’t always the best idea. Instead, you will want to pay a little more for work performed by a trained technician.

“Like many services, the cheapest option is likely not the best option,” iSeeCars explains.

3. Brands of oil and oil filters

Oil filters and brands can vary depending on personal preference or what the manufacturer recommends. You will want to follow its guidelines if the manufacturer specifies an oil type. If you have a particular oil brand you like, such as Mobile or Valvoline, you may want to find a shop that uses these brands. Sometimes, the shops can order the oil you prefer, but you may have to pay a little extra.

4. Extra services

These are the additional services that can be found in a full-service center. You may wonder if the oil change service includes a complimentary car wash. You might also wonder if they can get you in and out in a short time. Can they also top off any fluids or check your vehicle’s tire pressure? You may want to consider these things in your decision-making if you’re seeking a full-service experience.

5. Type of oil: conventional oil vs. synthetic oil

No matter where you visit, you will be asked if you’d like the techs to use conventional or synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is more expensive and is better for your engine. Conventional oil is suitable, but synthetic oil will protect your engine longer.

According to iSeeCars, “While conventional oil (i.e., mineral oil) can provide adequate lubrication performance, it can’t compete with the overall engine performance and protection provided by synthetics. There’s also the option of full synthetic or a synthetic blend. Full synthetic oils provide the best protection.” If you drive a new vehicle and it’s under warranty, you will want to follow the manufacturer’s interval levels.
