Automobiles are often the most significant financial investment many people make unless they buy a house. Being such a significant investment, the vehicle they buy must last long enough to see it pay off. While many brands boast longevity, several Toyota models routinely exceed 200,000 miles and keep going for many more.

How many miles can a car last?

A recent study by iSeeCars found several vehicles of various makes and models exceeding 200,000 miles. The study “analyzed over two million cars” in use between January 2022 and October 2022. 

Then, it ranked the top one percent of each model based on those with the highest mileage. To qualify for the study, models had to have at least 10 production years between 2002 and 2021 and be in production for the 2020 model year.

The iSeeCars study found three-row SUVs the most durable, followed by pickup trucks and passenger cars. Hybrids performed better than fully electric vehicles, with the Tesla Model S barely surpassing the tenth-place-hybrid – the BMW 7 Series – with 133,998 miles. The fact that Japanese automakers, particularly Toyota, dominate the list isn’t surprising. 

The top five Toyota models on the iSeeCars list 

As mentioned, three-row SUVs and pickup trucks dominate the list, but Toyota SUVs, light-duty pickups, and hybrid cars all take five of the top 10 spots. 

The Toyota Sequoia is a premier large SUV

The first vehicle on iSeeCars’ list of “Top 20 Cars Offering the Greatest Potential Lifespan” is the reliable Toyota Sequoia, with a potential lifespan of 296,509 miles.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is a large luxury SUV with a hybrid powertrain that produces up to 437 hp. Toyota says the Sequoia twin-turbo V6 Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined. 

The Toyota Land Cruiser and all its heft isn’t too far behind

Next on the list is the Toyota Land Cruiser, with a potential lifespan of 280,236 miles. MotorTrend says that Toyota introduced the Land Cruiser 60 years ago but discontinued it in the United States after the 2021 model year.

However, Jack Hollis, an Executive VP for Toyota, told MotorTrend that the Land Cruiser nameplate will likely return to the U.S. at some point but wouldn’t commit to a time frame.

The Toyota Tundra is an underrated truck option

The next Toyota on the list, the Toyota Tundra, comes in at No. 4 behind the Chevrolet Suburban. The Tundra’s potential lifespan is 256,022 thanks to the same technology, build processes, and platform that similar large Toyota SUVs enjoy.

U.S. News says that the current Tundra lineup features a variety of powertrains, including a “muscular twin-turbo V6” or a more powerful hybrid version. 

Count on the Toyota Prius to last a while

The Toyota Prius is the fourth Toyota on the list, with a potential lifespan of 250,601 miles. The Prius launched in October 1997 as the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. A 1.8-liter gasoline engine provides the basis for the Prius powertrain, an upgrade from the 1.5-liter powerplant in early Prius models. 

New Toyota Avalon models might be dead, but it’s still a good long-term play

The Toyota Avalon rounds out the top five Toyota models at number nine, with a potential lifespan of 245,710 miles. Car and Driver tell us the full-size Avalon features a choice of V6 or hybrid powertrains. While the Avalon features a “spacious cabin that’s all-day comfortable,” 2022 is the last year for the big sedan. 

Which Toyota car lasts the longest?

The Toyota Prius has the longest potential lifespan of any of the Toyota car models, followed by the Avalon, as mentioned. Other Toyotas making the top 20 list include the Highlander Hybrid, 4Runner, Sienna, Tacoma, and Camry Hybrid. The Toyota Camry Hybrid finished 20th on the list but still has a potential lifespan of 230,547 miles.
