5 Toyota Models With Worse Sales Than the bZ4X EV
The bZ4X is one of Toyota’s biggest projects in recent years. The bZ4X is Toyota’s first all-electric vehicle available in all 50 states. While Toyota did indeed have other electric projects like the RAV4 EV in the late 90s, this was primarily for the California market. Meanwhile, the bZ4X is for everyone. Toyota took its time with the bZ4X. Instead of rushing into the EV marketplace, Toyota sat back and strategized. After letting other brands cut their teeth in the EV marketplace to mixed results, Toyota and Subaru worked together to create the Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra, which are essentially the same vehicle with different badges.
On paper, it sounds like the perfect storm. Toyota and Subaru working together to create a groundbreaking mass-market EV. However, the bZ4X isn’t necessarily flying off dealer lots. The bZ4X even had a recall and a stop-sale issued from the NHTSA because some consumers had their bZ4X wheels come off while driving. Even without the recall, the bZ4X only received average reviews from critics due to its lackluster range and uninspired driving. However, the bZ4X is outselling five Toyota models despite these issues. Here are the five Toyota models with worse car sales numbers than the bZ4X EV.
1. Toyota Mirai
The Toyota Mirai is a hydrogen fuel cell-powered car only available in select markets in California. As a Californian myself living in the San Francisco Bay Area, these can be found on the roads, but they are rare. According to GoodCarBadCar, only 2,604 units have been sold so far this year. The Mirai isn’t a bad car, but when you buy one, you are limited to only traveling to places with Hydrogen fuel cell stations. That’s a tough sell, and it is easy to see why the bZ4X is selling more units.
2. Toyota Supra/GR Supra
The Toyota Supra is a very niche performance vehicle struggling a bit regarding car sales, even as a vehicle with limited availability. Currently, only 2,097 Supras have been sold so far this year, a 45% drop in sales compared to last year. The Supra is tough to get a hold of, and when you find one, it is not uncommon to see a considerable markup. It’s no wonder the Supra isn’t selling as well as it could be.
3. Toyota C-HR
The Toyota C-HR has only moved 776 units so far this year, and before you drop your jaw at that low number of car sales, keep in mind that the C-HR was just discontinued. Filling its place in the Toyota lineup is the Corolla Cross, a great alternative for buyers who want a more pedestrian RAV4. The C-HR will continue to drop in sales until its remaining inventory has been sold.
4. Toyota Avalon
The Toyota Avalon is dead. This large luxury full-size sedan has been discontinued in favor of the new Toyota Crown. While we may lament the end of this staple of the Toyota lineup in America, there is still some remaining inventory to be had. Only 52 units have been sold so far this year. If you want a taste of the final few Avalons left on dealer lots, you better hurry.
5. Toyota Land Cruiser
The Toyota Land Cruiser may be the rarest new vehicle in America. In fact, at the time of this writing, only five Land Cruisers have been sold this year. More Bugatti Chirons have been sold this year than Toyota Land Cruisers, and the Chiron retails for upwards of $4 million. Before you think your Land Cruiser is worth millions, calm down; the Land Cruiser has been discontinued. While a redesign for the Land Cruiser is on the horizon, some people are finding these old Land Cruisers on dealer lots, and the final few remaining are finding homes.
