Anyone looking for a large sedan would do well by checking out a new Toyota Crown, but the only issue is that it’s quite expensive. The base Crown XLE costs $40,000, and the up-level Platinum trim costs more than $50,000. That price range may be out of budget for some buyers, so we found five used Toyota Crown alternatives that cost less than $40,000.

2021 Lexus ES Hybrid – Average price: $34,193

Since the 2023 Toyota Crown is a hybrid sedan, we think it’s only fitting that a 2021 Lexus ES Hybrid would be a good alternative. The ES 300h is a midsize sedan, but it has a very spacious interior with plenty of features, a smooth ride quality, and a fuel-efficient engine. Some of its most notable features include real leather upholstery, a premium Mark Levinson sound system, and a head-up display.

The ES 300h is also powered by a 2.5-liter engine mated to an electric motor for a total power output of 176. That’s not bad, but the most important part of the equation is the EPA-estimated 43 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway that the ES 300h is rated for.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon – Average price: $33,124

The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is like a budget version of the Audi A7, and that’s not a bad thing. It has a hatchback shape with avant-garde styling, but it’s a little slower than its Audi counterpart. Under the hood of the Arteon is a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that puts out 268 hp and can get up to 32 mpg on the highway.

That’s plenty of power and style wrapped into a unique German sedan. It may not be a hybrid like the all-new Toyota Crown, but the Arteon is still a good option.

2021 Cadillac CT4 – Average price: $37,491

The 2021 Cadillac CT4 is a little smaller than the Toyota Crown, but it’s also more nimble and aggressive-looking. According to the editors at Car and Driver, “Its sharp styling matches its playful driving demeanor, and the CT4 serves as a desirable entry-level Caddy that doesn’t ignore the wants and needs of enthusiast drivers.”

The Cadillac CT4 is better suited for drivers who like to carve up canyon roads and possibly get on the track during a random weekend. The base CT4 is powered by a 237-hp, 2.0-liter engine, but a 309-hp 2.7-liter engine is available.

2021 Genesis G70 – Average price: $36,217

Like the Cadillac CT4, the 2021 Genesis G70 sedan focuses on balancing comfort, style, and performance. The G70’s cabin is delightfully elegant, with unique patterns and soft leather, and its exterior body lines give it a subtle and soft look. Under the hood, a turbocharged 2.0-liter puts out 252 hp, but a more powerful 365-hp V6 model is also available. One cool feature we like is the optional manual transmission, which the Toyota Crown does not have.

2022 Dodge Charger – Average price: $30,898

Some Toyota Crown shoppers may prefer all-American muscle instead. In that case, the 2022 Dodge Charger presents a great value. For far less than $40,000, the Charger GT offers a 292-hp V6 engine that’s connected to an all-wheel drivetrain. The Charger also provides plenty of comfort for up to five adults in addition to sporty handling characteristics and updated tech features.
