$50 Million Ferrari 250 GTO Being Chased by a Bugatti Veyron on the Highway Is Too Cool
Somethings are just cool. There is no analysis, no explanation, and no qualifications needed to understand why it is so cool. There are cars like the Jeep Wrangler or Miata that need some context to understand the cool their coolness. Still, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO and a Bugatti Veyron tearing up the same public stretch of road really doesn’t need much to be something undeniably great. However, I will elaborate because I am an automotive journalist Blow-hard, and talking about cool cars is the best part of the job.
Ferrari 250 GTO plays with a Bugatti Veyron
In case you don’t know, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO is the only car you’ll chase and never want to pass. This Ferrari is likely the most coveted car of all time. (I am happy to hear arguments on this take, but I think many car nerds would agree.) The $50-million price tag alone should show that there is something celestial about these cars.
In “normal” life, the Bugatti Veyron is a pretty big deal. These cars easily clear a million dollars and at one time were the fastest car in the world. I mention this to add clarity to how special the 250 GTO is. If a Bugatti driver is happy to merely follow another car, then that should tell us something.
Actually, it’s even cooler than just a 250 GTO
…if there is even such a thing as “just a Ferrari 250 GTO?” If you’re familiar with this model in the video, you still might be questioning the $50 million figure, and that would be fair. According to Motor1, this particular 250 GTO is the second one ever made and the first to ever race. This makes the insanely rare Ferrari even more impossibly rare and significant.
The video is amazing. There is no music, talking, nothing. The soundtrack is nothing more than the sound of the Ferrari V12 grabbing some high revs now and again. What is really amazing is that you can easily remember and then forget, multiple times, that most of it is shot from the seat of a Bugatti Veyron. The 250 GTO is so dominant that you truly can’t find room to care about the Bugatti.
How many Ferrari 250 GTOs were made?
This particular one is so special becuase it was the second-ever made and raced in the 12 hours of Sebring and placed sixth back in 1962. Even though this one is exceptional, any Ferrari 250 GTO is hyper rare and special because there were only 36 examples ever made. Between this one’s specific situation and the over 250 GTO situation, this car officially earned the title of the most expensive car in the world in 2016 when it was listed for an unfathomable $56 million. To prove this isn’t just a wacky asking price, It sold back in 2014 for $50 million.

If you don’t know much or care that much about classic cars or collector cars, I get that but look at the lines. Take a minute to listen to the sound of this 58-year-old race car. Chances are if you give the Ferrari 250 GTO a chance to affect you, it will. It is a cliche, but it is a true work of art. Its lines and proportions are really every bit as beautiful as a Monet or Rembrandt.
