550-hp Cadillac CT6-V Finally On Sale at Dealers
After a month-long delay, the Cadillac CT6-V is finally going to be arriving at dealerships soon. Despite being a great car however, the future of the CT6 series looks dim. Here’s a look at the latest CT6-V and why it may be your last chance to get your hands on one.
The Blackwing
About 600 of these Caddies will come equipped with the Blackwing engine, a 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 that generates over 550 hp. This is the main sticking point of the CT6-V and it provides a much-needed performance boost to this luxury sedan. According to Car and Driver, the Blackwing engine allows the CT6-V to accelerate from 0-to-60 miles per hour in just 3.8 seconds and it can hit a top speed of 149 miles per hour.
The CT6-V is not just fast in a straight line either, as Car and Driver, in its test drive of the car, said that it handled corners very well. In fact, Car and Driver mentioned that the CT6-V is at the top of its class in terms of handling a corner.
Price and practicality wise however, the CT6-V is about average compared to other luxury sedans. Car and Driver mentioned that the CT6-V’s interior wasn’t great and its fuel economy of about 18 combined MPG was about average. For its hefty starting price tag of about $93,000, the CT6-V is a high-performance luxury sedan that prioritizes its performance over its luxury capabilities.
Declining sales
Although only about 600 drivers will be able to own a Blackwing CT6-V, the sales of its base variant, the CT6 isn’t that high to begin with. Good Car Bad Car reports that less than 500 CT6s were sold in September of 2019 and so far in the year, less than 6,000 CT6s were sold. That marks a massive 37% decline in sales compared to last year.
This isn’t something that’s unique to the CT6 or to Cadillac either. Sedan sales in the U.S. have been on the decline since more and more drivers are choosing to buy a truck or an SUV rather than a sedan. The drivers who do choose to buy a luxury sedan though, are largely choosing to buy a sedan that’s more unique than what the CT6 or even the CT6-V has to offer.
For example, the Tesla Model 3 is the best selling sedan that’s comparable to the CT6 and it’s sold over 100,000 cars so far this year. The Model 3 is a more affordable luxury electric car and many drivers love what it has to offer. Another comparable sedan that’s selling well is the BMW 5-series and it offers, among other things, more power and more luxury at a comparable price to the CT6.
Future of the CT6-V
Because of those reasons, Car and Driver don’t think that the 550-hp Blackwing engine will save the CT6 line of cars. Motor1 did report a rebound in sales of the CT6-V in this model year compared to the last model year, but again, Motor1 doubts that Cadillac will continue this line of cars.
As Car and Driver reported, currently there are no plans to manufacture the CT6 after the 2020 model year is complete and so, this CT6-V may be the last car in the CT6 series to be produced. Despite some of its flaws, it’s still a very powerful and high-performance sedan that will likely be quite rare in the future. If you want to own a CT6-V before it gets sold out, then you should start checking your local dealerships soon.
