For construction workers, landscapers, weekend campers, and others who pull trailers regularly, one of the highest priorities when purchasing a full-size truck is towing capacity. While the prospect of towing can come with an array of intimidating facts and figures, TrueCar was nice enough to put together a list of full-size trucks with the best towing capacity.

Each truck on the list is available with an automatic transmission, either two-wheel or four-wheel-drive, and can manage at least a four-ton load pulled from the rear.

2022 Ford F-150: $31,520 starting MSRP

The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling full-size truck in America since its inception, mainly for providing consumers with enough options and configurations to meet absolutely any need. According to TrueCar, the 2022 F-150 boasts eight trim levels, six engine options (but no diesel), and a range of capabilities to create everything from a highway cruiser to an off-road barnstormer.

Maximum towing capacity ranges between 8,200-14,000 lbs depending on the engine. While the intelligently-designed twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine can pull the most weight, consumers wanting a more old-school sound with Ford’s throaty 5.0-liter Coyote V8 can tow up to 13,000 lbs with 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500: $34,600 starting MSRP

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is one of many to offer a diesel option in a half-ton full-size truck. With nine trim packages to choose from, consumers also have their pick of four engines, which provide a minimum of 9,500 lbs of towing capacity from the turbocharged 2.7-liter I-4 engine option.

Maximum towing capacity is achieved with Chevy’s gasoline-powered 6.2-liter V8 engine with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque or the 3.0-liter I-6 turbodiesel putting down 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, which can pull 13,300 lbs, respectively.

2022 GMC Sierra 1500: $35,400 starting MSRP

The GMC Sierra 1500 has nearly identical options to its Chevrolet cousin, minus one trim level option. Nevertheless, it can be fitted with four powerful engines, including the 5.3-liter V8 producing 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, with a maximum towing capacity of 11,200 lbs.

The Sierra and its cousin also have advanced driver-assist features that can assist with towing. 

2022 Ram 1500: $36,500 starting MSRP

The Ram 1500 can be optioned with five engines, including a diesel option, and nine trim levels from workhorse to expensive thoroughbred. Keeping with tradition, the Ram can have the most powerful factory engine ever fitted to a half-ton pickup truck, the supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 churning out 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque.

If you’re less concerned about standing quarter miles and appreciate practical capabilities more, the Ram also has an available 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with 260 hp and a best-in-class 480 lb-ft of torque, capable of a 12,560-lb towing capacity which is the second-best for diesel models in the lineup. Nevertheless, if gasoline-powered pulling is what you want, the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with eTorque blends performance-enhancing equipment with efficient technology to provide 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque for a maximum towing capacity of 12,750 lbs.

2022 Toyota Tundra: $35,950 starting MSRP

The Toyota Tundra brings a facelift and 10 trim levels to the competition but offers only one engine configuration. The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter i-FORCE V6 has various power outputs depending on which trim level you choose, from 348 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque in the base model and 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque in the premium trim packages with the i-FORCE MAX variant. Towing capacity, depending on your configuration and accessories, has a max limit of 12,000 lbs.

The most popular by far is the middle-of-the-road powerplant pushing out 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, which has a maximum towing capacity of 11,400 lbs.

2022 Nissan Titan: $38,810 starting MSRP

The Nissan Titan sports a long list of standard safety equipment and a roomy interior. Yet, it offers far less in trim configurations, with only four, and just one powerplant, the 5.6-liter Endurance V8.

The Titan’s single engine option has more power than any other base V8 engine, with 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. Though, it results in the poorest fuel mileage for the full-size pickup segment and the lowest maximum towing capacity out of the top six. Still, the Nissan Titan manages an adequate 9,320 lbs, with the Nissan Titan XD upgrading to 11,060 lbs.

What is the best all-around full-size truck for towing? 

The Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra have great standard equipment but lack the towing capabilities of their competitors. The Ram offers excellent performance but is topped by the high tow ratings of the Sierra and Silverado.

Ford’s F-150 doesn’t offer a diesel variant, and prices increase quickly from the base. However, when it comes to sheer options, it has the competition licked.
