Every new model year, most automakers will focus on updating maybe one or two of the models in their lineup. However, Subaru likes to think differently and for 2022, the Japanese automaker is making changes to not one, but six of its existing models. That’s a lot of changes, so in case anyone is interested in buying a 2022 model year Subaru, here is what you can expect.

The Subaru BRZ will be entering its second generation

The Subaru BRZ made its first appearance back in 2012 and for the 2022 model year, it will enter its second generation. JD Power reports that the BRZ now sports a completely new look and a new chassis that is 50% stiffer than the outgoing model. Additionally, the BRZ will have a new 2.4-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine under its hood that produces 228 hp as well as some infotainment and safety updates. It’s safe to say that Subaru’s only non-AWD model is growing up nicely.

The 2022 Subaru Forester gets a new front fascia and Wilderness model

If you need ample room for up to five and the type of utility that Subaru’s are known for, then the Forester won’t let you down. For the 2022 model year, the Forester is getting a new front fascia, a new camera for its safety systems, and a new hand gesturing featuring for its climate controls.

The bigger news, however, is that there will also be a new Wilderness Edition joining the Forester lineup. This new trim level features 9.2 inches of ground clearance, greater break-over and departure angles, and all-terrain tires.

The Subaru Legacy has a few changes for 2022

Subaru didn’t make too many changes to the mid-size Legacy for 2022. The base model will receive black 17-inch wheels while the Sport and Premium trim levels will receive heated and cooled rear seats, which is a unique touch for the segment. Additionally, the Sport trim will also get a blind-spot warning with automatic reverse braking and a power moonroof.

The Subaru Outback will have a Wilderness trim as well

For 2022, the Subaru Outback’s main update is the addition of the Wilderness trim level. Just like its Forester bigger brother, the Outback Wilderness will gain an increase in ground clearance (up to 9.5 from 8.7 inches), modified bumpers for better approach and departure angles, and a modified AWD system for more traction. Aside from this new trim level, the Outback Premium will receive rear-seat air vents the base model will now have LED fog lights.

The Subaru WRX is all-new for 2022

The all-new 2022 Subaru WRX will sport a new look, a stiffer chassis, and a lower center of gravity as compared to the outgoing model. Under the hood is a turbocharged 271-hp Boxer engine that can be connected to either a six-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission. Additionally, the WRX will also have new infotainment and safety features along with a larger 11.6-inch touchscreen.

The Subaru Ascent gets blacked-out for 2022

Subaru’s three-row SUV, the Ascent, will have a new Onyx Edition for the 2022 model year. This blacked-out trim level features a unique Star-Tex interior, darkened trim inside and out, and black 20-inch wheels. Otherwise, no other changes to the Ascent were made.

All of these changes are welcomed, but look out for the 2023 Solterra

While all the aforementioned changes to Subaru’s lineup are welcomed and somewhat extensive, one model to look out for is the forthcoming Solterra. This electric vehicle will be the brand’s first foray into the world of electric vehicles, so it will be interesting to see what type of features and technologies it rolls out.
