6 Things to Know Before Buying a 2022 Toyota Supra
The Toyota Supra has it’s second coming back in 2019 after a long hiatus. It shares its platform with the BMW Z4, much to the disappointment of many car enthusiasts. However, if you can experience the Supra first-hand, you’ll know that it has superb handling characteristics and phenomenal performance for a sports car in its price range.
It’s so good that you may want to buy one. In that case, here are six things to know before pulling the trigger on a 2022 Toyota Supra.
1. Despite its BMW engine, the 2022 Toyota Supra offers soaring acceleration
If having the best performance out of any sports car is important, then the 2022 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 is what you seek. This up-level trim comes with a Z4-sourced turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine under the hood, which pumps out 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. According to Hot Cars, those power numbers translate into a best-in-class 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds.
That’s not bad, especially since the engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. However, a manual transmission variant will be available soon.
2. The interior is BMW-crafted as well, but it’s well done
Sitting inside the 2022 GR Supra, it’s hard not to notice all the BMW-crafted pieces. Specifically the shifter, the infotainment system, and the center console buttons. However, those Z4-sourced pieces mean that the interior is well put together as soft-touch materials are everywhere in addition to the carbon-fiber trim. Overall, it’s a comfortable place to spend time, even when you’re sitting in traffic.
3. The 2022 Supra comes standard with the driver-assist features you need
In addition to its quality interior pieces and performance parts, the 2022 Supra comes standard with a few driver-assist features. Those features include an automated emergency braking system with pedestrian detection, a lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams.
Some basic safety features include traction control, ABS, stability control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. More driver-assist features are available when you opt for the $3,155 “safety and technology” package.
4. There is a four-cylinder model available, and its better than you think
If you don’t care too much about all-out speed, then you may prefer the 2022 Toyota Supra 2.0. The entry-level trim comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Yes, that’s quite a drop from the Supra 3.0. However, it’s enough to rocket the car from 0-60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. That makes it quicker than the BMW Z4 and the Audi TT.
5. The interior can feel cramped for taller drivers
The 2022 Supra’s interior is comfortable and well-crafted. However, it can feel cramped for taller drivers. How tall? According to some Supra owners, the car’s low roofline should fit drivers no taller than 6 feet, 5 inches tall. That should be a relief to most vertically gifted drivers. However, the small percentage of taller drivers may need to look elsewhere.
6. The Toyota Supra is more fuel-efficient than you might expect
No one buys a 2022 Toyota Supra for fuel efficiency. However, you may be surprised that the Supra 2.0 can achieve an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. In our real-world testing, we were able to achieve an average of around 30 mpg, which is impressive for a sports car of this nature.
Things to know before buying a 2022 Toyota Supra
Ultimately, the 2022 Toyota Supra is an amazing sports car that can be purchased for less than $60,000. No matter which iteration you choose, the Supra will provide many years and miles of driving enjoyment. And now you know a few more things about it before pulling the trigger on one.
