6 of the Worst Vehicles That are Painful to Fill Up at the Pump in 2022
The price of gas has gone up exponentially in the past few months and no one really knows when it’s going to return to normal. According to AAA, the current national average price for a gallon of gas is $4.20, but in some states, drivers have reported paying $6 per gallon. That being said, it’s probably not a great idea to purchase one of these six vehicles as they are sure to cost you an arm and a leg at the pump.
1. 2022 Ford Expedition – $119 to fill up
With seating for up to eight passengers, a four-wheel drivetrain, and a potent 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, the 2022 Ford Expedition is one of the ultimate family vacation cars. However, that great capability leads to terrible gas mileage as the Expedition gets an EPA estimated 17 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway. According to Everyman Driver, the Expedition has a 28-gallon gas tank, which means that if you were to fill it up at $4.20 per gallon, you’re looking at a total of $119.
2. 2022 Chevrolet Suburban – $118 to fill up
There’s a lot to love about the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban including generous second and third-row legroom in addition to class-leading cargo volume. It’s even available with a large 6.2-liter V8 engine that pushes out 420 hp, but that power comes with a mileage penalty. According to the EPA, the Suburban can get up to 16 mpg in combined driving, which can be painful when it’s time to gas up. Considering It has a 28-gallon tank, it can cost up to $118 to fill up.
3. 2022 Nissan Armada – $109 to fill up
While the 2022 Nissan Armada might not be the first three-row SUV to pop into your head, it still has a lot to offer. It can tow up to 8,500 pounds, has 400 hp, and has a ton of cargo capacity. However, it also achieves an EPA-estimated 15 mpg and has a 26-gallon fuel, which means that it won’t be fun to fuel up. In fact, it’ll cost about $109 to get the needle to the “full” mark.
4. 2022 RAM 1500 – $109 to fill up
When it comes to pick-up trucks, the 2022 RAM 1500 is a solid choice. It has creative features like the RamBox cargo system and a large interior with 45 inches of rear-seat legroom. Under its hood is a 3.5-liter V6 that provides a lot of pulling power, but that power comes at a price at the pump. With its 23-gallon gas tank, you can expect to pay around $109 when filling it up.
5. 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe – $101 to fill up
According to Car and Driver, the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe is one of the most versatile SUVs in its class. It provides minivan-like people moving abilities in addition to pick-up truck towing capability. However, its available 6.2-liter V8 engine likes to drink gas, which means that you can look forward to paying $101 to fill up its 24-gallon tank.
6. 2022 Toyota Tundra – $135 to fill up
The Toyota Tundra was revamped for 2022 and now comes standard with a twin-turbo V6 engine as opposed to the old-school V8. And while the new powerplant is a little more efficient with an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in mixed driving situations, the Tundra is still a pain to fill up. The Tundra has a 22.5-gallon gas tank, so at an average of $4.20 a gallon, you’re looking at a total price of $94.50.
Plenty of pain at the pump
After looking at the following six vehicles, it’s no wonder that many consumers are flocking to trade their gas-guzzling SUVs for hybrid and electric cars. However, if you need the capability, space, and power that these SUVs and trucks have to offer, just bring a box of tissues with you to the gas station because you may be crying by the time you hear the click of the fuel pump nozzle.
