The future is electric pickup trucks, and they’re finally here. On top of what’s already available, even more, are coming in 2022 and later. The biggest names in the automotive industry will soon enter the electric truck segment, including Ford, Chevy, Ram, Tesla, and more. These EV trucks attempt to one-up the others as they near release time. Which electric pickup truck will be the best?

Ford F-150 Lightning: America’s favorite truck electrified

Due to overwhelming demand for the electric version of America’s favorite pickup, the Lightning could keep getting delayed. This electric F-150 does everything a standard one would plus even more. Some are even calling it the best work truck you can buy. Plus, the base Pro model retails for just $41,669, which is remarkably affordable compared to many competitors.

It comes with a standard 98.0-kWh battery pack or the upgraded 131.0-kWh unit. Additionally, the base model offers 230 miles of range and 426 horsepower, but the higher trim reaches 300 miles per charge. However, reports show that an even higher-distance battery will enter the lineup. If the rumor comes true, an F-150 Lightning model could offer over 400 miles of driving range per charge. That’s a lot of electric range, plus it can power your house for a few days.

Chevy Silverado EV: An electric pickup truck coming soon

When you found out that Ford was making an electric F-150, you knew its closest competitors would do the same. Chevrolet unveiled the new Silverado EV early in 2022, but it won’t begin production until next year. It’s another electric pickup truck to keep an eye on since it’s the ever-popular Silverado but with a stylish new design and tons of electric power.

According to GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, the Silverado EV was “designed from the ground up to drive circles around the competition.” Like a future version of the Lightning, it should offer more than 400 miles of driving range. Additionally, a sleek design and all-wheel drive are just a few items that’ll help it stand out from rivals.

Will the Tesla Cybertruck ever come out?

Certainly the most unique-looking truck of the bunch, the electric Tesla pickup has a strange design. You’ve probably heard about its (allegedly) bullet-proof windows and much more. The truck was initially set to release long ago for around $40,000, but much has changed since then. After multiple delays, the Cybertruck won’t even enter production until 2023. Additionally, there are a lot of updates being made to try to keep up with the new competition.

Options like crab-walking and 4-wheel steering, which come with the Rivian R1T, will supposedly be available with Tesla’s model. It seems like every time a great new feature is announced for a different model; Tesla begins its redesign. We’re not sure when the Cybertruck will finally come out, but if it has 500 miles per charge and 15,000 pounds of towing capacity, it’ll be hard to beat.

GMC Sierra EV is different than the Silverado

As many people know, the standard Silverado and Sierra share a lot. They’re almost the same truck with different logos on them. However, as Review Geek mentioned, the EV variants are much more different. Toward the end of 2021, GMC shared teaser images for the GMC Sierra Denali EV. Surely it’ll be the most luxurious version of either electric pickup truck.

Most notably, it appears to have a different front end than its corporate cousin. GMC will officially unveil the truck sometime in 2022, but it won’t reach the streets until 2023. The same Ultium battery packs are being used to power it as other GM electric models, which provide upwards of 400 miles of driving range.

Have you heard of the Lordstown Endurance?

One of the only electric pickup trucks on the list you probably haven’t heard of, the Endurance is exciting. Lordstown Motors is a startup EV company similar to Rivian in many ways. Unfortunately, they’ve had less financial success and aren’t as well-known. This truck was initially intended as a fleet vehicle with a limit of 80 mph. However, it will eventually be offered to regular customers who wish to drive it every day.

The Lordstown Endurance is capable of over 250 miles of range, 7,500 pounds of towing capacity, and delivers nearly 600 horsepower. It comes with a 109-kWh battery pack to power the entire thing. Like others on the list, it’s been delayed multiple times for one reason or another. As of right now, it should start hitting the streets in early 2023.

The RAM 1500 EV might be the biggest Lightning competitor

Like standard pickup trucks, the electric truck game is changing thanks to the Ram 1500. The F-150 has continued to outsell its fiercest rival in the last few years, but the Ram 1500 has gained much traction. For instance, in 2021, the Ram 1500 received better review scores from publications like MotorTrend and Consumer Reports. It’s become not only a capable truck but a luxurious and affordable one to boot.

Ram intends for the same thing with its EV variant. Since it doesn’t release until 2024, we don’t know much about it yet. However, the company claims it will offer 500 miles of range per charge, 10,000 pounds of towing capacity, fast charging speeds, and autonomous driving features. Expect the Ram 1500 EV to jump to the top of many buyers’ lists when it’s closer to production in a few years.

Toyota Tacoma EV: Everyone’s favorite midsize pickup truck

At the end of 2021, Toyota just happened to mention a group of electric vehicles coming soon. The Japanese automaker will produce 15 EVs by the year 2025. Among them was a prototype for the next Tacoma pickup truck in electric form. It’s likely based on the next-gen version since it doesn’t resemble the current Tacoma. It looks like the new Tundra design but smaller, but bigger than the current Tacoma size.

We expect to learn more about this monster announcement further into 2022. We don’t know much yet, but it’ll indeed compete with the likes of the Rivian R1T. The more we learn about it, the more we expect to see other automakers announce electric pickup trucks in this segment. Models like the Ford Ranger, Honda Ridgeline, and Chevy Colorado might get the electric treatment next.
