7 Things You Need to Know About Driving the 2024 Toyota Supra
Do you seriously want a sports car? Is the Toyota GR Supra the right option for you? I spent a week with it to learn everything I could behind the wheel. If you’re really interested then see what driving the 2024 Toyota Supra is like.
What is driving the 2024 Toyota GR Supra like?
I can’t even begin to lie about how much fun driving the 2024 Toyota GR Supra is. I drove it from the backroads of South Carolina to the mountain tops in Asheville, North Carolina.
But I didn’t let the glam and smooth performance sway my opinion. While there are Supra upsides to consider, there are also a few potential issues to consider.
1. The Toyota Supra has a great performance
The 2024 Toyota GR Supra has an available turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that cranks out 381 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but a six-speed manual transmission is available.
It has an instant power delivery with smooth gear shifts and direct steering. The tires offer plenty of grip for a confident and athletic experience. You feel in control, but the brakes are quick and responsive if you need to come to a stop.
But the quality of pavement matters. On busted-up back roads, I was bouncing around but on freshly paved roads the ride quality was extremely smooth.
2. The Supra gets a lot of attention
Driving the 2024 Toyota GR Supra gets tons of attention which can be exhausting when you’re just trying to run a few errands without a lot of hoopla.
I got coal rolled by a Ford F-250 Roush performance truck, tailgated by a Subaru WRX, honked at, and people motioned for me to floor it.
People needed to keep their eyes on the road and let me do my thing. I was also asked about it in parking lots and when I ran into neighbors at local shops.
3. The Toyota Supra has poor visibility
Seeing out of the GR Supra can be a challenge. The rear window is short and narrow. Also, large pillars block your view while turning.
Because the Supra sits so low, it can be difficult to see around bushes, foliage, or hills while trying to turn left.
I also couldn’t see people around me. I could only see truck doors around me, it was too short to see the drivers because my view was cut off before it reached their windows.
The Supra has a dated rearview camera with a low resolution. Where are the forward-facing cameras or 360-degree views?
4. The 2024 Supra has a good fuel economy
While driving the 2024 Toyota GR Supra, I noticed that it wasn’t burning gas as expected. Even with the jot of flooring it and using Sport mode for faster responses.
It gets an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in the city and up to 31 mpg on the highway. With my week that included interstate driving, running errands with tons of stop lights, and sitting idle for photo shoots, I got 27.8 mpg.
5. The Toyota Supra isn’t for taller folks
The Toyota Supra has extremely comfortable seats with plenty of adjustment range, but taller people may feel claustrophobic or uncomfortable.
At 5’1”, I felt a little cramped due to a lack of headspace. My 5’8” passenger sat with his knees close to his chest.
Plus, the low-entry height makes entering and exiting the vehicle interesting. I slammed my head on the roof once, then started getting in more carefully.
While getting out of the Supra, I felt like a crunched-up spider as all my limbs extended from my bent core to grab onto something.
To make the most of the small space, there is a serious lack of storage. You have two small trays and two cup holders to use.
6. The 2024 Supra is agile
While driving the 2024 Toyota GR Supra I was impressed with its agile versatility. It’s easy to squeeze into tight spaces and whip around.
It has a 17.05 turning radius, making it convenient to turn around in crowded areas. It makes city driving extremely convenient. But visibility over the bulking hood makes me wish for the forward-facing cameras AGAIN.
7. The Supra is attractive
The 2024 Supra has a sleek, attractive style that gets pretty addicting. I found myself scrolling through the photos I took. Also, after parking it and walking away, I kept turning around to look at it.
It’s one of those beautiful cars that makes you stop and appreciate it. Some would call that true car love.
