Toyota is the largest car company in Japan and among the biggest in the world. The brand sells 17 models in the United States in car, truck, SUV, and minivan categories. One of its flagships — the Corolla — is among the best-selling vehicles of all time.
In 2021, Toyota reported it sold more than 2 million vehicles in the U.S. According to CNBC, that sales total made it the highest-selling automaker in America, dethroning General Motors.
But with 17 Toyota vehicles to choose from, which one is superior? Reviewers at TrueCar ranked the best 2022 models on the market right now, spanning all categories. Here are the ones that cracked the top eight:
1. 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime
MSRP: $41,015
Like the Corolla, the Toyota RAV4 is another top-rated vehicle worldwide. The iconic compact SUV debuted in 1994 and has sold in the millions in the United States alone. In 2020, the RAV4 was Toyota’s top-selling model.
The Prime puts the compact SUV staple on a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 2.5-liter inline-four engine offers respectable acceleration and excellent fuel economy. This model zooms from 0 to 60 mph in less than six seconds and gets about 40 mpg. All-wheel drive comes standard, and the RAV4 Prime can go 42 miles on electric power alone.
If the $41,015 price seems high, know that the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime qualifies for $7,500 in federal tax credits.
2. 2022 Toyota Sienna
MSRP: $35,925
Toyota’s premier minivan, the Sienna, got a significant redesign for 2021, including a standard hybrid engine. The 2022 model sees a slight makeover in trims but keeps much of what made the Sienna sell more than 100,000 units in the U.S. last year, per Toyota sales figures.
It’s one of just two minivans on the market with AWD options. TrueCar reviewers also highlight the Sienna’s modern interior and fold-out leg rests for second-row passengers. However, one drawback is the maximum cargo volume is lower than the competition because the second-row seats are not removable.
3. 2022 Toyota Tundra
MSRP: $37,645
For the first time in nearly a decade, Toyota redesigned its full-size pickup for the new model year. The 2022 Tundra gets new exterior features — like a massive grille — and a hybrid V6 option that gives you an extra bump in torque (up to 479 lb-ft).
Inside, the infotainment system also sports an upgrade, and TrueCar notes the new suspension makes for a smoother ride. In addition, buyers can opt for four-wheel drive. Plus, the Tundra is the only full-size truck with adaptive cruise control.
4. 2022 Toyota Highlander
MSRP: $36,620
The Highlander, Toyota’s three-row midsize crossover, has been a bestseller in its class for the past 20 years.
The 2021 Highlander’s safety features and ratings made it a standout again in its segment. You can get this SUV with front- or all-wheel drive, and hybrid options are also available.
Reviewers note that it might not be the most exciting midsize SUV to drive, but the Highlander’s fuel economy, reliability, and comfort make it one of the top Toyota models.
5. 2022 Toyota Prius Prime
MSRP: $29,245
The Prius, another iconic Toyota car, was the first mass-produced hybrid. Rolling since 1997, it has become the top-selling hybrid in the U.S.
Offering three trim levels, the plug-in hybrid Prime version gets more than 50 mpg and provides plenty of room.
TrueCar reviewers note that standard features like heated front seats make for a pleasant driving experience. However, the 2022 Prius Prime’s rivals offer a better ride and more cargo room.
6. 2022 Toyota Venza
MSRP: $34,105
Another two-row SUV, the Toyota Venza returned as a hybrid in 2021. It fits between the RAV4 and Highlander in the brand’s crossover lineup. As with the RAV4, AWD comes standard on the Venza, and the hybrid powertrain gets better fuel economy — EPA-estimated 40 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway — than rivals.
Though reviewers acknowledge it lacks amenities compared to competitors, the Venza upholds Toyota’s reputation for reliability and technology. Also, the interior comfort is a step above, with the XLE trim feeling like a luxury SUV.
7. 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross
MSRP: $23,410
All-new for 2022, the Toyota Corolla Cross is a subcompact SUV that TrueCar says “combines the comfortable ride of a sedan with the cargo versatility of an SUV.”
It slots between the smaller C-HR and the larger RAV4. Because of that, the second-row seats are a bit tighter.
As with many Toyota models, the safety features are a Corolla Cross calling card. Standard driver assists include pedestrian detection and forward collision warning.
Power-wise, the Corolla Cross gives you more for your right foot than the Honda HR-V but a bit less than the Hyundai Kona.
8. 2022 Toyota Camry
MSRP: $26,420
The Toyota Camry holds the title of most popular midsize sedan. Toyota reports that it sold more than 300,000 models in the U.S. in 2021, second only to the RAV4.
The Camry’s most significant change for 2022 is a new trim level — the Nightshade Edition — for the hybrid version, but much of the 2021 model’s features remain the same.
For 2022, this excellent Toyota car maintains the fuel efficiency and roomy interior that have become the Camry’s signature. It gets nearly 40 mpg on the highway while easily seating three adults in the back row. However, that passenger room eats into the trunk space.
But compared to rivals, that issue and the underpowered base engine are the only real drawbacks to this superb Toyota car.
