Rachel M. Veitch is proud her 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente–which she’s named “Chariot“–has outlasted all three of her marriages. Rachel said, “She’s never lied to me, never cheated on me, and I can always depend on her.” And with 567,000 miles on the odometer, it’s clear Rachel not only loves roadtripping, but can keep Chariot in tip-top shape on her own.

There are precious few ultra high-milage one-owner cars in the world. Each of them has a truly special story: There’s a Long Island teacher who loved roadtripping his 1966 Volvo 1800S so much he’s driven to Alaska and shipped it to Europe to tour. There’s a Greek taxi driver who found his 1976 Mercedes-Benz 240D so reliable that he wouldn’t sell it to Mercedes until they promised him a replacement. And then there’s Rachel and Chariot, a truly legendary duo.

Rachel will always remember the 1964 day her husband (number one) came on in a brand new Mercury Comet. The yellow four-door had all the latest features: power steering, automatic transmission, and even air conditioning. Rachel especially loved the trim level, with its own badges: “Caliente.”

She is quick to add that “Caliente” means “hot.” And Chariot is no exception. “I’ve had her up to one hundred and twenty.”

Rachel said that spirited drive was on a county road in her home state of Florida. She accelerated up to 120 mph and stayed there until she realized a single stay animal would mean the end of Chariot and her. Even at lower speeds, Chariot’s 4.3-liter V8 never leaves Rachel wanting for power. And despite over 500k miles, she’s never had to swap it out.

By the time Rachel’s first marriage ended in 1972, her husband had bought himself a new car. So when she asked to keep Chariot, and give him the 1971, he was thrilled. She already knew she wanted to keep Chariot for a long time. So every time a part wore out, she was proactive. She sought out replacements with lifetime guarantees. And she’s saved a ton on those guarantees over the years.

For the price of one set of Sears shock absorbers, Chariot’s worn three sets. For the cost of one Midas muffler, she’s had eight. And for what one battery cost, Chariot’s enjoyed 18. Rachel admits that managers often try to give her a hard time, but she sticks to her guns. And when mechanics try to sell her their own parts, she packs up and goes elsewhere.

Rachel’s reward has been a lifetime of roadtrips with the love of her life. She drove Chariot 3,200 miles to her 70th high school reunion in Pennsylvania. She drove Chariot over 1,000 miles to the Dearborn, Michigan factory where she was made–to celebrate the car’s “birthday party.”

Most of the miles Rachel put on Chariot were just to wander down some road and see where it took her. Is this 89-year-old woman scared of roadtripping all by herself? Heavens no! She trusts Chariot o get her home. And besides, she’s got her Florida concealed carry permit and a revolver in her purse.

A cheeky sign hanging in Chariot’s back window reads: “Just Bragging. Over 540,000 Miles. Same owner & engine.”
