A New Ford Recall in 2023: The Most-Recalled Car Brand of 2022 is Already Off to a Rough Start
Recently, we reported that Ford was the most-recalled car brand of 2022. With nearly nine million vehicles called back over 67 separate notices, Ford is already coming off of a difficult year. Now, just 27 days into 2023 a new Ford recall is making news. Issues with faulty backup cameras are affecting nearly 400,000 Ford and Lincoln SUVs, creating a safety hazard that requires immediate attention.
About the latest recall
In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford has indicated an issue with the 360-degree camera system on the affected vehicles. The rearview camera display can fail without warning, leading to a blank blue screen rather than an image of the road behind the vehicle. In total, Ford has seen over 2,100 warranty claims already as a result of faulty rearview camera equipment. In addition, Ford claimed knowledge of 17 minor accidents resulting from the recalled components. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported regarding the recall thus far.
Three Ford and Lincoln SUV models with a recall in 2023
Owners of three Ford or Lincoln SUVs may be headed to the dealership for a faulty rearview camera. Included in the latest recall are both Lincoln Aviator and Ford Explorer models from 2020 through 2023 and 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair SUVs. In total, 382,759 affected vehicles will need attention to remain safe. Most are Ford Explorer models from October of 2018 and January 3rd of this year, according to Car and Driver.
Similar recalls plagued Ford in 2022
This isn’t the first time that the 360-degree camera system has caused a massive Ford recall. Last year, nearly 300,000 Ford and Lincoln vehicles saw recalls due to degrading camera lenses. These models included Ford SuperDuty trucks and Lincoln Continental sedans from 2017 to 2020. In that case, the coating on the affected cameras was causing poor rearward visibility. That said, it is different than the software issue causing the 2023 Ford recall.
Other Ford recalls from last year included Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUVs for a fire risk to due faulty fuel injectors, plus failing windshield wiper motors and drive shaft failures on Ford F-150 pickups.
Ford led all automakers with 67 recalls in 2022
Unfortunately for Ford, their first 2023 recall is just a continuation of their difficult 2022. In total, the automatker issued 67 recalls throughout last year, and this year is already off to a difficult start.

Ford dealers have received instructions to update the camera system’s processor for free to remedy the issue.
