In 2018, the Victoria Police set up an arrangement with BMW for the supply of eighty 530d diesel four-door saloons. The latest addition, however, has brought a whole new performance level to the collection.

Now when it comes to the most eclectic fleet of police cars in the world, it is safe to say that the United Arab Emirates have everyone beat. With vehicles like the Porsche 918 Spyder and the Renault Twizy, it isn’t hard to understand why.

Australia, on the other hand, has also had a respectable variety, with cars like the Audi RS4 and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe in their ranks. Its July addition, however, threatens to have all past cars beat.

BMW M5 Competition joins the force

Joining Australia’s already existing 530d patrol vehicles is the F90 BMW M5 Competition. Being able to go from zero to 62 mph in only 3.3 seconds, and having a top speed of 190 mph, the new M5 Competition is easily the fastest police vehicle in Australia.

While the vehicle costs more than $100,000, the Victoria Police did not have to spend a single cent of the taxpayer’s money. The car is a one-year loan supplied by BMW’s local division.

According to Vikram Pawah, BMW Group Australia CEO, the Australian police force has been impressed with the 530ds due to its blend of performance, efficiency, comfort, and dynamics. Furthermore, BMW’s Condition-Based model for servicing the cars enables them to attain extended lifecycles.

With the M5 Competition, thanks to the safety added by the xDrive four-wheel drive, its all-round ability makes it a perfect fit for police duties.

The F90 BMW M5 Competition becomes the latest addition of a performance vehicle by police forces in Australia; their most recent effort in trying to replace the defunct Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore.

The perfect police car

A good police car needs to fast. The F90 BMW M5 Competition has that covered. It offers a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine which produces 625 hp with 553 lb-ft of torque. This means Victoria police officers will have no trouble catching up to speeders.

To make the car more dynamic and sharper than the standard model, the vehicle is fitted with more rigid Competition-specific engine mounts. These provide better response and a more rigid front end.

Vikram Pawah further added that with the addition of the BMW M5 Competition to the Victoria Police service ranks, the level of performance has jumped up the scale. With all these and possibly even more performance tweaks, it would be impossible to argue with that view.

With the latest addition to Australia’s police highway patrol, motorists residing in Victoria now have a new reason to obey the traffic laws down under.
