Are you looking to make an irrational decision by buying a used sports car to have as a weekend toy, or maybe even a daily driver? In either case, the Jaguar F-Type is a great choice. This robust two-seater blends luxury and performance while providing a well-balanced means of transportation any day of the week.

Sales pitch aside, the F-Type carries a high price tag on the new car market, however, if you opt for a used one, then you may find that it’s a pretty good bargain.

A 40-year hiatus

The Jaguar F-Type debuted at the 2013 LA Auto Show for the 2014 model year. The big news about it back then was that the F-Type was the first Jaguar sports car to be produced since the production of the E-Type from 1961 to 1974.

While there can be some parallels to be drawn from the older car, including the circular taillights and rounded body panels, the Jaguar F-Type is still a solid performer in its own right. It might take some styling cues from the E-Type, however, it’s sleeker body lines and flush door handles give it a modern look.

When it was introduced, the F-Type was available solely as a convertible, however, a coupe body style was released for the 2015 model year. So in case you prefer one with an actual roof, then we suggest starting your search at that model year.

Just know that there are different trims levels: Base, F-Type S, F-Type R, and F-Type SVR.

Engine choices

The base Jaguar F-Type comes with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine under the hood that produces 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. If you’re really in need of more power, then we suggest stepping up to the F-Type S.

The up-level trim comes with a massaged version of the base model’s V6 and puts out power to the tune of 380 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. Both of these trim levels are available in rear or all-wheel-drive variations and come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, a manual transmission was available, but only in rear-wheel-drive form.

And in case you’re still thirsty for more power, then you can look into finding an F-Type R, which uses a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that pushes out 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque.

But why stop there? If you want all-out power, then we suggest finding an F-Type SVR as it has the same 5.0-liter supercharged V8 as the F-Type R, but an additional 25 horsepower and 14 more lb-ft of torque.

No matter which trim level you choose, you can expect 0-60 times to be in the 4 and 5-second territory.

Everything you need

These high-performance engines offer a large amount of power, but they don’t throw off the delicate engineering balance that Jaguar injected into the car. According to Edmunds, the F-Type provides the stunning acceleration and luxury-car comforts that you would expect.

U.S. News noted that the F-Type’s seats are plush and supportive, thanks to large side bolsters. And despite its small cabin, the F-Type has adequate head and legroom for taller drivers and passengers.

As for infotainment, an 8-inch touchscreen sits front and center and includes navigation. Bluetooth, and a Meridian sound system. It’s also easy to use, thanks to a simple button layout.

How much does it cost?

A new Jaguar F-Type starts at around $61,000 for the base model and up to around $103,000 for the SVR trim. But a nationwide search on the used car market reveals that 2014 models are going for around $25,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim, condition, mileage, and location.

However, if you’re looking for an SVR trim, then expect to see prices jump up to around $70,000 to $90,000 for 2017 to 2019 models years. Either way, you can see that it’s a pretty good deal.
