Acceleration Showdown: The 5 Quickest 0-60 Production Cars in the World
Most people are familiar with the fact that supercars are fast. However, some folks may not realize just how fast their acceleration can be. In recent years, some cars’ sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour has ascended to frightening levels. Gone are the days of a four-second zero to 60 sprint being impressive. In the case of these cars, three seconds wouldn’t even cut the mustard. Hold on to your hats and put your head against the headrest. Here’s an ascending list of the five fastest zero to 60 mph cars in the world.
Lamborghini Huracan Performante – 2.3 seconds
According to Dupont Registry, the fifth-fastest accelerating car is the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. It’s hard to believe that cracking into the top five alone requires a sub-2.5-second time.
The Huracan Performante has a 5.2-liter V10 with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The engine makes an astonishing 630 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Its real party trick, though, is that it weighs in at only 3,000 pounds. This makes this mighty Lambo only a tad heavier than a Ford Fiesta. This power-to-weight ratio makes the Performante sprint from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in just 2.3 seconds
992 Porsche 911 Turbo S – 2.2 seconds
Taking up the fourth spot on this list is the 992 Porsche 911 Turbo S. Not only that, though, this is currently the fastest accelerating car that Porsche produces. It isn’t, however, the fastest Porsche has made. More on that in a bit.
The 992 Turbo S has a twin-turbo 3.7-liter flat-six engine, making 640 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. It also uses a dual-clutch automatic transmission and puts down an eye-watering 2.2-second zero to 60 run.
Porsche 918 Spyder – 2.1 seconds
The Porsche 918 Spyder is the fastest accelerating car Porsche has ever made. Though its production ended in 2015, it still has performance figures that most manufacturers can not touch to this day.
The 918 Spyder uses a hybrid-assisted 4.6-liter V8 that puts out a monstrous 887 horsepower and an even more astonishing 944 pound-feet of torque. With its complex all-wheel drive system, the 918 sprints from zero to 60 in just 2.1 seconds with its complex all-wheel drive system.
Tesla Model S Plaid – 1.98 seconds
Putting this car on this list in this position seems a little unfair. However, MotorTrend confirmed that a Tesla Model S Plaid managed an insane zero to 60 sprint in just 1.98 seconds. However, this was on a drag strip with the surface prepped for a hard launch. It’s also worth noting that this is the cheapest car on the list, too. So if you’re looking for the most “affordable” way into the top five acceleration club, here’s your answer.
The Tesla Model S Plaid uses three electric motors for a total power output of 1,020 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque. Despite its hefty curb weight approaching 5,000 pounds, the Model S Plaid does have a lightning-quick zero to 60 time.
Not quite quick enough to hold the title for the fastest in the world, though.
Koenigsegg Gemera – 1.9 seconds
This is it! The fastest production car on the plane is the Koenigsegg Gemera. Interestingly enough, it happens to have four seats. It also has the smallest engine on the list (obviously excluding the one that doesn’t have an engine at all).
It has a 2.0-liter twin-turbo inline three-cylinder engine. That sounds pretty tiny, and it is, but the big performance comes in the form of a tri-motor layout just like the Model S Plaid. All said and done; it makes 1700 horsepower with 2581 pound-feet of torque, and, no, that wasn’t just a random number smash on the keyboard. Those mind-melting power figures are legit.
Combining that massive power with its impressively low weight (considering the electric motor assembly) of 4,079 pounds, the Gemera sprints from zero to 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds.
These awesome acceleration machines are more rockets than they are cars.
No matter which of these top five cars you may find yourself in, you’re surely in for the
ride of your life. It’s virtually impossible to comprehend the feeling without experiencing such rapid acceleration in a car.
So, if you happen to know someone with one of these cars or have the capital to purchase one, don’t hesitate! It is a thrilling experience.
Oh yeah, and do it at a race track.
