It’s not unusual to feel some buyer’s remorse after getting a new car. Although some cars and trucks rarely disappoint, many more end up on ‘never buy’ lists. Luxury vehicles often appear, likely due to their often-expensive repairs and usually-quick depreciation. And despite high sticker prices, quite a few luxury cars suffer reliability issues. One particularly notable example is the Range Rover—which is why, in a recent Reddit post, it was voted as the most overrated car.

Why Reddit called the Range Rover “overrated”

On the r/Cars sub-Reddit, user u/npoggi79 asked what fellow Redditors’ most overrated car was. Although u/npoggi79’s personal choice was the G-Wagon, by far the most up-voted response was the Range Rover.

Although Range Rovers are indeed luxurious and quite capable off-road, they’re mostly bought as status symbols, as opposed to actual off-roading. And, as several commenters pointed out, they’re not exactly reliable. In fact, the top 3 least-reliable luxury SUVs are all Range Rovers—not a good look when a new one can cost almost $200k. Used models may offer an affordable alternative, but they’re just as problem-prone.

Doug Demuro, of Autotrader and YouTube, famously bought a used 2006 Range Rover from CarMax with a “bumper-to-bumper unlimited warranty.” He paid $27,000 for the SUV and $3,899 for the warranty in 2012. By the time it expired in 2018, CarMax had paid out over $21,000 in repairs. The warranty paid for itself in the first 18 months.

If you want a luxury SUV that can genuinely go off-road, a Porsche Cayenne is a much more reliable choice. Or, if you truly want a Range Rover, go with a modern restomod.

What other cars showed up in the Reddit list?

Although the Range Rover was the most upvoted answer, several other cars also garnered large numbers of upvotes.

One was the Subaru WRX. Although it’s still a beloved performance icon—and with the demise of the Focus RS and Lancer Evo, the only rally-inspired passenger car left—it’s not perfect. Both Car and Driver and Consumer Reports have both critiqued it for a somewhat-cheap-feeling interior, although the seats are comfortable.

CR ranked it last in its “Sports/Sporty Cars Under $40,000” category, with below-average reliability. In fact, it’s the only Subaru product not to receive a CR recommendation. And although the WRX can keep up with cars like the Civic Type R and Volkswagen GTI, Throttle House found the GTI and Hyundai Veloster N were much better all-around vehicles.

Another car that was repeatedly mentioned is the Maserati Ghibli. With some options pushing the sticker price up to $80k, it is one of the cheapest Maserati models. However, that doesn’t make it worth it.

As Car and Driver and Autotrader have reported, the Ghibli simply feels cheap. The vast majority of the car’s switchgear—buttons, window switches, the rear-view camera, and infotainment system—all come from cheaper FCA products. And some of them don’t even fit properly. If you really want a good Maserati, it’s better to spring for the GranTurismo.

Which car did users praise?

There is one car, though, that received quite a bit of praise. That was the 2012-2018 Ford Focus ST.

Although it’s not sold in the US anymore, the Focus ST was an excellent alternative to the GTI. It was a practical hatchback that, courtesy of a 252-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and revised suspension, was a lot of fun in the daily-commute, especially when the road got twisty. And it was available only with a 6-speed manual.

Although the Focus has had its reliability issues, Redditors report the ST is no more or less reliable than other hot hatchbacks. And the manual transmission avoids the problems Ford’s dual-clutch had. It’s also fairly-affordable: Autotrader has several available with less than 100k miles for $10,000-$20,000.
