Acura has been pumping out some nostalgic nameplates as of late. First, it released the second coming of the Integra, and soon it will return the ZDX to the spotlight. But Acura has had some other unique models in the recent past – specifically performance sedans like the TL Type S. Yes, we’re aware that the TLX Type S exists, and we love it. But would it be worth it for any Acura enthusiast to purchase a used TL Type S in today’s market?

The 2007-2008 Acura TL Type S models are considered the best to buy

There were a few different iterations of the Acura TL Type S. However, some critics believe the 2007-2008 model year was the best. Under the hood was the same 3.5-liter V6 found in the non-Type S model, but it massaged to make 286 hp and 256 lb-ft of torque. That potent mill could be paired with a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential.

Of course, the latter was the better choice of the two. Adding to the car’s overall performance were a set of four-piston Brembo brake calipers and a sportier suspension. The 07-08 TL Type S also brought about some new in-cabin technology at the time. Some of the notable features included Bluetooth hands-free technology, a traffic-enable onboard navigation system, and a surround-sound audio system.

According to a review from CNET: “The 2007 Acura TL Type-S has all the ingredients to combine techno luxury with performance driving for a very attractive sub-$40k luxury sports sedan.” Fortunately, this vintage of the TL Type S doesn’t cost that much nowadays.

The 2010-2014 Acura TL Type-S came with SH-AWD

The fourth-generation Acura TL Type S offered controversial exterior styling in the form of a large beak-like front grille. But those that could look past it would be treated to a larger 3.7-liter V6 that produced 305 hp. That powerplant could be mated to either an automatic or six-speed manual transmission. But this time, Acura incorporated its Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system into the mix.

That added a lot of traction, which in turn aided in the car’s overall performance. “The TL grips like Krylon, as you would expect of all-wheel drive. So the time slip shows an ET of 14.8 seconds, with a 0-60 along the way of six seconds flat,” wrote the editors of Car and Driver.

Aside from the car’s performance, it also came with a new look on the inside and new technology. An extra Technology package added tech like a backup camera, an 8-inch touchscreen, onboard navigation, and hard-drive media storage.

Is it worth it to buy an Acura TL Type S now?

A recent nationwide search on Autotrader reveals that 07-08 Acura TL Type S models are priced anywhere between $15,000 and $20,000. The fourth-generation Acura TL Type S models are selling for around the same price depending on the car’s mileage and condition.

That price range is a little more elevated than a few years ago, but it’s still a good range for the type of car you’re getting. Also, Acuras are known for their dead-on reliability, so we have no doubts that any nostalgic enthusiast can pick up one of these cars and enjoy it for years to come.
