Mazda has introduced a brand new SUV to their line-up sure to excite outdoor enthusiasts. The Mazda CX-50’s sporty design, off-road capabilities, and rugged features set it apart from the Mazda CX-5. Best of all, the price is only nominally more, beginning at $28,025.

There are a lot of sporty crossover SUVs on the market, which can make choosing the right one difficult. According to Consumer Reports, the CX-50 maintains sleekness and more premium options than the Subaru Forester or the Ford Bronco Sport. But how does it compare to the Jeep Compass?

While the Compass is an extremely popular off-roading SUV, there are five reasons to consider the 2023 Mazda CX-50 instead.

Standard all-wheel drive (AWD)

Although Jeep is famous for its rugged, off-road vehicles, according to Edmunds, the 2022 Jeep Compass comes standard with front-wheel drive. While the Latitude Lux, Limited, and Trailhawk come standard with AWD, consumers must pay for the upgraded AWD option if they choose the standard Compass model.

In comparison, AWD is included in all Mazda CX-50s. This feature will allow CX-50 drivers the advantage of better speed, agility, and traction for outdoor excursions. 

Fuel economy ratings

With gas prices continually rising, it is expected for car buyers to keep fuel economy in mind. If you are deciding between a Jeep Compass or a Mazda CX-50, there is an obvious winner in fuel economy.

According to Car and Driver, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists the 2022 Jeep Compass’s fuel economy as 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. While the CX-50 also performs at 30 mpg on the highway, it gets 24 miles to the gallon on city streets, making it a better choice for those looking to conserve fuel. 

Standard horsepower and torque

Whether you are taking your new SUV on dirt roads or city streets, you will want to know how much power it has. If it is power you are looking for, the Mazda CX-50 has you covered. The base model possesses 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. For those desiring even more power, the turbo engine upgrade provides you with 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. While the 2022 Jeep Compass’s power capabilities are nothing to sneeze at, they are less than the CX-50 coming in at 177 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque.

More ground clearance

If you plan to take your new SUV off-roading, you will inevitably be concerned with its ground clearance. High ground clearance helps keep the underbelly of the SUV safe from scrapes and damage as you navigate uneven terrain. Higher ground clearance also allows you better visibility to ensure a safe ride. 

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 helps to keep you safe off-roading by providing 8.3 inches of ground clearance. The Jeep Compass only offers 7.7 inches of ground clearance, making it more vulnerable on rocky roads.

Less cabin noise

While an SUV’s performance is essential, you also want to enjoy a comfortable ride. Part of the comfort is the level of noise in the cabin. Jeep recognized the need for improvement on the Compass’s cabin noise. The 2022 model minimizes wind and road noises. According to Consumer Reports, unfortunately, the engine is noisy compared to competitors, creating significant cabin noise. There have also been reports of aggravating rattling noises. 

In contrast to the 2022 Jeep Compass, the 2023 CX-50 has a comfortable, premium interior with features ensuring a smooth ride. The only complaint is its poor handling of potholes and other road obstacles.
