Critics love to point out that the Toyota 4Runner is aging. It’s true. The 4runner hasn’t been redesigned in quite some time. But that doesn’t matter. The 2022 Toyota 4Runner still has the best resale value among SUVs.

Thanks to Kelley Blue Book, the numbers are in. The 2022 Toyota 4Runner dominates with the best resale value. The 4Runner has a resale value of 58 percent, while honorable mentions such as the Kia Telluride scored a 51.9 percent resale value, and the Subaru Crosstrek has a 52.3 percent resale value.

The Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards are based on projections from the KKB Official Residual Value Guide. The values are based on millions of transactions. Vehicles with the highest five-year residual values are expressed as a percentage of the original MSRP.

Resale value matters because it provides peace of mind with your vehicle decision. It lets you know that your vehicle will retain its worth when it’s time to sell or trade it in. It can hopefully prevent you from becoming upside down in your payment.

How reliable is the 4Runner?

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner has a high resale value because this vehicle is known for being incredibly reliable. According to Consumer Reports, the 4Runner has a predicted reliability rating of four out of five. This score is above average.

Consumer Reports provides a predicted reliability rating based on how well previous model years hold up. Surveys are sent to thousands of vehicle owners, allowing them to report any issues they may have experienced in 17 potential trouble spots.

The trouble spots include everything from the body integrity, fuel system, transmission, and more. It looks like the 4Runner struggled with fuel system issues in 2019, but other than that, most of the severe issues are reported on models from before 2016.

With proper care and maintenance, the Toyota 4Runner can easily make it past 300,000 miles. In fact, finding a used 4Runner with 200,000 miles is OK. If it was maintained regularly, it could have plenty of life left.

It costs about $514 to maintain a Toyota 4Runner on an annual basis. This is great compared to the average SUV yearly maintenance cost of $652.

The 4Runner is capable

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner also holds its value well because it’s extremely capable of off-roading adventures. The TRD Pro comes with a locking rear differential, a TRD-tuned suspension, Nitto Terra Grappler all-terrain tires, 17-inch matte-black TRD alloy wheels, Bilstein shocks with remote reservoirs, and more. It has a ground clearance of 9.6 inches.

The 4Runner comes with a 4.0-liter V6 engine with 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,700 lbs.

Got an extra kid or a dog? Great, the 4runner has a third row for them. It’s a bit tight, but it’s fine for children. There’s also plenty of space for your gear. You can access up to 47.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and up to 89.7 cubes total.

The 4Runner is valuable as a capable, well-rounded family-friendly SUV. If you purchase one and decide it’s not your cup of tea, don’t worry. It will have a solid resale value.
