Jeep is known for its rugged off-road capabilities, and for not changing its models very often. The current Jeep Grand Cherokee has been in production for 11 years and it is time to update it. As a higher-end Jeep, a lot has happened in 11 years. In many ways, the Grand Cherokee is what most people who think of Jeep see as representing the brand. It’s probably the most versatile and practical model Jeep makes. 

The luxury segment requires keeping up with technology and the competition. Jeep is hoping this all-new Grand Cherokee will be the segment’s benchmark. With that in mind, the current platform gets the heave-ho. In its place will be a modified version of the Fiat Chrysler Giorgio platform. This is the same platform that is the basis for the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio. The wheelbase will be longer than either Alfa’s 114.9-inch version. We’ll have to wait and see how much longer, though.

The Grand Cherokee will offer a broad range of engines

Engine choices will be very broad; from turbocharged four-bangers to Hemi V8s. Starting with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, then the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, and the 5.7-liter Hemi V8. Mixed within that lineup will be a plug-in hybrid. Also expect a supercharged Hemi for the Trackhawk model. All engine options will be available across the board whether 2WD or 4WD. 

Suspension options will also spread out whether you’re looking for a cruiser or something that is more “Trail Rated.” That includes air-suspension and dual-range transfer cases.

Because we know the wheelbase will be extended from the platform’s original 114.9-inches this will result in more room inside. Three-row seating is what many buyers in this segment want and so expect this option, though not initially. Keep in mind this is still a mid-size SUV. Those wanting a larger Jeep can go to the Grand Wagoneer which should land in 2022. That will be truck-based to give you some idea of the size.

Just like sister division Ram the Grand Cherokee will lead the segment in luxury interiors

Like we said earlier it’s all about tech and luxury. The latest Uconnect infotainment system will find its way into the Grand Cherokee. A 10.1-inch display screen will sit side-by-side with a 10.5-inch digital gauge panel. Another convenience feature we’re seeing in more vehicles is the rotary dial instead of a shift lever for selecting gears. This will also be part of all Grand Cherokees.

Sister division Ram found a way to raise the bar on interiors in the pickup segment. It helped to propel the brand past Chevy to take over 2nd place in pickup sales for 2019. That same take will be applied to the Grand Cherokee. It is expected to have the same effect as it did in the pickup arena.

Over the years the Grand Cherokee has sold well over 200,000 each year going back years. In fact, last year saw its best sales ever at almost 243,000 units sold. Jeep will make sure it is a major hit.
