With the All-Wheel Drive 2024 Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai is Swinging for the Fences
Not content to let its luxury arm get all the love, Hyundai has delivered a stunning, all-wheel drive 2024 Hyundai Sonata just two years after its last update. Not only is the newest Sonata getting power to all four wheels, but it comes with a truly magnificent face and high-class interior. And the best part? It all comes for less than $30,000.
Hyundai’s first all-wheel drive Sonata lands for 2024
With all-wheel drive variants of the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima already on the market, Hyundai has now responded with the 2024 Sonata. Sporting the Korean automaker’s H-Trac technology, and the new, all-wheel drive Sonata is sure to be a hit. Though, if we’re honest, where the new Hyundai midsize sedan sends its power isn’t the highlight of this latest update.
Will the 2024 Sonata be redesigned?
Design is subjective, yes, but the current generation Hyundai Sonata is far from stylish. The wide, angular grille gives it a catfish-like maw, and the headlight trails up the hood adding a set of whiskers to complete the look.
For 2024, the Hyundai Sonata has gone through quite the glo-up. Gone is the awkward, oversized grille, instead replaced with an aggressive honeycomb grille on the lower front bumper. Above that, a strip of painted bodywork sits just below a narrow LED strip that stretches clean across the entire front end.
Things get better around the back of the 2024 Sonata as well. The upturned staple taillight design goes into the bin, replaced by a cleaner LED strip across the trunk. Hammer heads jut out either end to accentuate the brake lights. A ghosted checkerboard pattern is home to reverse lights and turn signals.
Overall, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata looks all grown up, and it’s ready for a close-up.
A new look inside the new Sonata
Hyundai has also taken a pen to the cabin design of the 2024 Hyundai Sonata. The interior of the old car was fine, but felt a bit low-rent compared to its competition. With Honda, Nissan, and Toyota raising the interior game, the 2024 Sonata had to follow suit.
Now, the dual digital displays are inlaid into a single display, ala BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The clean vent lines and simple HVAC controls are also reminiscent of Audi in their technical precision.
Say goodbye to the turbocharged Sonata
One unfortunate update is the loss of the 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It packed less horsepower but more torque than the 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated engine that remains in the 2024 Sonata, which made for more satisfying acceleration. However, that does allow for all Sonata trims, save for the Sonata N, to have an all-wheel drive option.
The Sonata N sticks around for 2024
For those who do want some more punch, the Hyundai Sonata N returns, complete with a head-turning new look. In many ways, the 290-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder is a perfect pairing for the midsize Hyundai’s aggressive new edge. However, the Sonata N doesn’t get all-wheel drive for 2024, so all that punch still only leaves through the front wheels.
The all-wheel drive Hyundai Sonata is worth getting excited for
Looks aside, the 2023 Hyundai Sonata was already one of the best midsize sedans on the market. Now through its ugly duckling phase and with all-wheel drive capability, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata should finally give Honda and Toyota something to worry about.
