Fresh off the announcement that BMW has purchased Alpina, the German tuner is set to reveal their newest car, the B4 Gran Coupe. BMW has held off making an M version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, but it looks as though Alpina will step in to make a high-performance version of the four-door 4 Series. We’ve seen spy shots of an Alpina 4 Series testing for a while, but the company has now released a teaser of the upcoming car.

What is an Alpina B4 Gran Coupe?

Alpina is well known in the BMW community and one of the most respected tuning companies in the world. Working exclusively with BMW, the company offers high-performance and customized versions of BMW’s cars and SUVs. Currently, Alpina offers 12 models, all of which are sold through BMW dealerships. Here in the U.S., we get three Alpina models, the B7 sedan, XB7 SUV, and the B8 Gran Coupe sedan.

The B4 Gran Coupe will be based on the BMW 4 Series. The Gran Coupe is the four-door version of the 4 Series coupe and is available in several trims. The M440i is the top trim and an epic car in its own right. The B4 Gran Coupe will sit above the M440i but below the M4. This will continue the tradition of offering a bespoke high-performance version of BMW’s most popular models. 

The best way to think about Alpina cars is to consider them a higher-performance, more comfortable, and more luxurious version of BMW’s cars and SUVs.

Alpina B4 Gran Coupe potential specs

As of today, no official details about the car have been revealed. Expect them to come when Alpina makes an official announcement and debut. We can, however, speculate based on reasonably good evidence what the B4 might be like.

The 4 Series is essentially the same car as the 3 Series. As such, it uses the same drivetrains and chassis components. Alpina makes a version of the 3 Series, called the B3, which is available outside of the U.S. in both sedan and station wagon form. 

Taking our cue from the Alpina B3, the B4 Gran Coupe will likely use the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. In the B3, it produces 456 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. That is enough shove to get the sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and top out at an electronically limited 188 mph. 

It would be reasonable to assume that the new B4 will have similar performance and use the same drivetrain in the B3. Along with the engine, expect the B4 Gran Coupe to have all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. 

Will the U.S. get the new Alpina B4?

That is the million-dollar question. Here in 2022, America only receives three Alpina models, all of which are the top-spec halo models. The B3 isn’t available here, and BMW doesn’t even offer the standard 3 Series station wagon in the U.S. 

BMW sells around 75,000 3 and 4 Series cars per year in the U.S. Despite consumer demand for SUVs and crossovers, those sedans remain popular. This could prove to BMW that there is a market for an Alpina version of the 3 and 4 Series. The luxury and high-end vehicle markets remain extremely strong, and there is every reason to believe that Alpina could sell the B4 Gran Coupe here in the U.S. with some success.

We will have to wait for the official global reveal to get further details on the B4 Gran Coupe, but we would be very excited to see the newest Alpina creation hit U.S. shores.
