You might not think that Amazon and automotive technological accessories overlap. However, Amazon’s AWS touches everything, and the transportation world is no exception. The global cloud services company has just released a new tool for the transportation industry called “AWS IoT FleetWise.” It promises to bring organized vehicle data into the future. 

More and more, vehicles will rely on cloud-based services to function. AWS FleetWise helps the transportation industry analyze the mountains of data created by their vehicles every day. All of this analysis takes place in near real-time, offering companies opportunities that were never possible before now. 

What is AWS loT FleetWise?

According to Amazon Web Services (AWS), AWS IoT Fleetwise is Amazon’s latest innovation in automotive cloud services. FleetWise allows auto suppliers and transport providers to organize, transmit, and accumulate data in the cloud in the transportation industry. This greatly simplifies data analysis, remotely diagnoses individual vehicle issues, and analyzes fleet health. 

Every year, vehicles become more advanced and more intelligent. This creates a massive amount of fragmented data. Fleetwise brings this data together for customers. The cloud service works seamlessly with GM’s OnStar, Ford’s Ford Pro Intelligence, and many other businesses. It organizes the information present in existing vehicles, regardless of their make or model, and makes it easy to analyze in the cloud. 

With AWS IoT FleetWise, automakers can collect, transfer, and transform data to the cloud. In almost real-time, they can use the data to build applications that improve their vehicles’ safety, autonomy, and quality. Uses include training computer vision models, minimizing warranty claims and recalls, improving electric vehicle battery range estimates, and notifying drivers of changing road conditions.

Amazon has spread its influence in the automotive industry through AWS. They modernize the sector through innovative products and services for personal and consumer vehicles. Amazon’s “AWS for Automotive” portfolio consists of products and services for the automotive industry, such as vehicle diagnostics, automated guided vehicles, and electric car technologies and accessories. 

An example of AWS for Automotive in the real world includes simulations for Lyft to improve the performance of its self-driving fleet. BMW processes over ten terabytes of data from its vehicles using AWS, and Rivian also uses simulations on AWS to reduce the need for prototypes. Another example is Toyota Connected, a suite of mobility services built on the AWS platform. 

What’s next for Amazon’s automotive cloud services?

In addition to new innovations for transportation fleets, AWS for Automotive is looking to the future. For the entire industry, this means autonomous driving. It is one of the four pillars of change that are coming for the car industry. The other three pillars are electrification, connected cars, and autonomous driving and safety. Autonomous vehicles will require continuous and reliable 5G coverage, whose rollout begins in January of 2022. It will be some time before 5G achieves nationwide coverage. 

Once the 5G rollout is complete, AWS will be the platform for the infrastructure for autonomous vehicles. Cutting edge computing will control these technologies, through the entire vehicle lifeline, from manufacturing to R&D to sales and service. Amazon’s cloud service will be how many of these technologies become possible.
