Amazon electric delivery vans are severely crippled by 1 missing part
Have you noticed new Amazon electric delivery vans in your neighborhood? Well, don’t expect to see more popping up anytime soon. Rivian can’t build more of the electric vans due to a temporary supply chain issue.
Rivian halts production of Amazon electric delivery vans
Amazon ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian and they should be deployed by 2023. However, Rivan was recently hit with a crucial supply chain shortage.
As a result, Rivian has halted production of the electric delivery vans until further notice, leaving Amazon temporarily stranded. Meanwhile, Amazon is Rivian’s largest investor with a 16% stake in the EV company.
Rivian shared that deliveries will be lower during the current quarter after shutting its factory down in April for retooling and modifications. Now the supply chain shortage could make things worse.
The current production halt is one of many supply chain struggles that Rivian has recently faced. But it’s not the only electric vehicle maker that has had production trouble in the past few years due to supply chain disruption.
A Rivian spokesperson shared that a part shortage has temporarily impacted Electric Delivery Van (EDV) production and all missed production is expected to be recovered.
They didn’t share which part is facing shortages when things will be recovered, when the production of the vans was halted, or when production will resume. The shortage isn’t impacting any other Rivian vehicles like the R1T or R1S.
The vans come in two sizes and provide about 150 miles of range. The Delivery 500 is the smaller model with 487 cubic feet of storage and a 2,734 lb payload capacity.
Upgrade to the larger Delivery 700 van for 652 feet of cubic storage space and a payload capacity of 2,513 lbs. The Delivery 500 is $83,000 and the Delivery 700 is $87,000.
Amazon drivers might have priority at the moment, but other fleets can order the electric delivery vans. Stay tuned for updates!
