1 American Jeep Is Moving to Mexico for a Triumphant Return
Welcome one missing SUV back to the stage! Rumors suggest that the affordable Jeep Grand Cherokee alternative is returning soon. See what to expect with the next-generation Jeep Cherokee.
The Jeep Cherokee isn’t being discontinued
For the past couple of years, the Jeep Cherokee has been neglected, and eventually, its factory in Illinois closed.
The Cherokee has been discontinued before, back in 2001. The more modern Jeep Liberty replaced it but didn’t stick around for too long.
Then in 2014, the Jeep Cherokee made its return and enjoyed a few years of success before being neglected and eventually abandoned. The last model rolled off the line in 2023.
However, instead of being discontinued, it’s expected to come back by the end of the year. CEO of Jeep, Antonio Filosa shared that the arrival of the heir to the Cherokee is probable.
Rumors suggest that the European model will be manufactured at the plant in Melfi, Italy, where five SUVs are produced. This is where the next-generation Jeep Compass will be built as well.
Stellantis has been meeting with Italian officials about increasing production there while managing revolts over production and naming rights. So, it might not be called the Cherokee overseas.
The American Cherokee is expected to be produced at the plant in Toluca, Mexico. Currently, this facility only builds the current Jeep Compass. The Jeep Wagoneer S and Recon could be heading to Mexico as well.
Because rumors suggest that the Jeep Cherokee will ride on the large STLA platform like the Wagoner S, and Recon, it could be easy to build the Cherokee alongside them.
However, the platform is eight lunches longer than the 2023 Cherokee. It’s about 1.5 inches wider too. This means that the new Cherokee could be the size of a three-row vehicle.
Would adding an affordable three-row vehicle to the lineup be a smart move for Jeep? The massive family-hauling Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Cherokee L have pretty expensive prices.
The 2023 Cherokee started at $37,695, so it’s hard to imagine an updated model that starts under $40,000. Also, will it be a hybrid, PHEV, or EV?
