Consumers love getting the latest and greatest vehicles on the market, so following the trends of which vehicles sell best is common. Trucks and SUVs are a hot item right now and have been growing in popularity for years. They are even breaking records for used car shoppers. There are no signs of trucks and SUVs dominating sedans so much that the latter die off, but the former are both certainly hot in the United States, and, apparently, Canada too.

Canada’s obsession with trucks and SUVs

Canadians are loving trucks and SUVs just like Americans are, which is proven by their top sales numbers. An SUV takes the No. 3 spot while two well-known trucks come in at No. 2 and No. 1. These results shouldn’t be surprising as they closely resemble the numbers American consumers put forth. 

No. 3 – Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 has taken over the market, claiming the top SUV spot for both America and Canada. Sales in Canada were up 17.8 percent for this Toyota model, and the RAV4 sold a total of 65,248 units. Of those sold, the hybrid model made an impressive dent with 14,246 of the count. With an increase of 82 percent from the year before, other makers might want to bring their hybrid SUVs to Canada too.

In the United States, the RAV4 makes the list for best fuel economy among 2020 SUVs, but it falls short of the No. 3 spot by one spot. The RAV4 made it in the No. 4 spot among U.S. trucks and SUVs, selling 448,071 units. It is, however, the best-selling SUV in America. In the U.S., the No. 3 spot was held by the Chevy Silverado.

No. 2 – Ram trucks

With the largest sales volume increase on the list, the Ram series of trucks saw a surge of 14 percent in sales. Perhaps it was the new 1500 or the HD versions of the big truck that helped these numbers. But it also potentially had something to do with the continuing sales of the old truck that provides a host of amenities and features and even extra special trims. This all seems to have provided the Ram an edge, but it still only made two-thirds of the sales the No. 1 selling truck did, with 96,673 units sold. 

In the United States, Ram trucks were also the No. 2 selling vehicle. Ram sold 633,694 trucks and won Motor Trend’s 2020 Truck of the Year award. It also jumped 18 percent in year-over-year sales improvement.

No. 1 – Ford F-Series

It should come as no surprise that a Ford truck makes the top spot on this list. Again. The F-Series is the best-selling vehicle in Canada and includes the F-150 and Super Duty models. It’s been the top-selling model for 10 years, only dropping a spot in 2008 when the Civic – a car and not a truck – took the top spot. If you’re talking only pickups, it’s been the best-seller for 54 amazing years in a row. That’s saying something, and it shows with the 145,064 units sold.

The Ford F-Series models are also the top-selling truck in America with 896,526 units sold. Sales have fallen a bit, and with Ram sales growing, it might not stay No. 1 forever. And since not every state in the United States loves the F-150 as much as the rest of America (and Canada too), that could happen sooner than expected. It’s really anyone’s guess.

Could more trucks and SUVs make the list?

With the rise in popularity of trucks and SUVs, it’s likely that more could surge up the list and claim top spots. That’s not to say that they’d take over the No. 1, No. 2, or No. 3 spots, but they could break the top 10 for sure.
