Are Mazdas Good SUVs?
In previous generations, Mazda was often overshadowed by Honda and Toyota. Now Mazda has set itself apart from its competitors by offering luxury-focused models at an affordable price point. This Japanese carmaker’s SUVs especially stand out in their respective classes because they are good options to buy new or used. We’ve gathered a few of the most popular SUVs in Mazda’s current lineup to guide you in your car-buying search.
2020 CX-5
Starting price: $25,190
The 2020 CX-5 is arguably the most popular Mazda of the year. This SUV especially gets high marks for being sporty and elegant. What also makes the CX-5 a crowd-pleaser is that it can be as practical or luxurious as you want it to be. This five-seater comes with a handsome cloth interior but faux leather and genuine leather trimmings are available. The CX-5 also comes with a nice 7-inch infotainment system that can be upgraded with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Standard CX-5 models are equipped with a 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. For more speed, you will want to go up to the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 250-hp with premium gas. There’s also a turbocharged diesel engine that’s available on the top-tier Signature trim. Whichever engine you choose, the CX-5 is an enjoyable ride. It’s no wonder Car and Driver even gave this SUV a 10/10.
2020 CX-9
Starting price: $33,890
Mazda’s CX-9 is particularly appealing to those looking for an affordable SUV that drives like an upscale model and also accommodates up to seven people. Auto critics have praised the CX-9 for its driving dynamics and for its long list of standard features. There’s only one engine option for the CX-9 and it’s a surprisingly quick 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The CX-9 also gets bonus points for its high-quality cabin that rivals true luxury models.
Standard in-car electronics on the CX-9 include a 7-inch infotainment display screen, voice recognition, as well as smartphone integration. This SUV also comes with many advanced safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. A surround-view parking camera system and adaptive headlight are also available.
2020 CX-30
Starting price: $21,900
If you are looking for a sporty subcompact, the CX-30 might be the right fit for you. Some vehicles in the subcompact SUV class miss the mark because they lack agility and refinement. That’s not the case with the CX-30 though. This all-new model delivers on comfort and provides a satisfying driving experience.
The CX-30 gets its power from a 186-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. This four-cylinder makes for a fun driving experience overall but it does feel sluggish at times. Because of this, Consumer Reports gave it an average rating for its acceleration. Even so, the CX-30 is a great choice because it’s engaging, comfortable, and has excellent safety scores.
