Are the Significant 2021 Toyota 4Runner Updates Worth it?
Do you want the 2020 Toyota 4Runner, or should you wait for the 2021 model to become available? This is a pretty tough choice, but reviewing the significant updates made to the 2021 Toyota 4Runner, you can hopefully make a more informed decision.
2021 Toyota 4Runner Updates
One of the most exciting updates for the 2021 Toyota 4Runner includes the return of the Trail Edition. I recently spoke to someone with a 2012 Toyota 4Runner who bragged about their Trail edition being incredibly rare as it was discontinued.
However, now it looks like he can upgrade to the newer Trail Edition Toyota 4Runner if he acts quickly. The Trail Edition has a limited production, and there will most likely only be 4,000 models manufactured. Because production is limited, the price may soar.

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition includes 17-inch wheels that are dark gray and black exterior badges. You also get all-weather rubber floor mats and black seats with tan stitching. It can come in rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.
The Trail Edition also comes with a 40-quart cooler that will match the paint cooler of your 4Runner. It will be available on a mounted sliding tray to make it easy to access. Coolers seem to be a prevalent addition to trucks and SUVs these days, so the 4Runner is attempting to keep up with the new trends.
If you like the Trail Edition and can’t get it, know that it’s based on the Toyota 4Runner SR5 trim, the base model. You may not get the unique wheels or stitching, but you can add your own weather mats and bring your cooler.
2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Updates
The 2021 Toyota 4runner TRD Pro trim gets a new exclusive lunar rock color and Nittor rock grappler tires. These are some of the best off-roading tires. The tires will also be TRD black and should improve the 4Runner’s experience with retuned fox shocks at high and low speeds.
The TRD Pro will also come with dampers that have been retuned to enhance isolation while off-roading. To complete the updated look along with the lunar rock shade, the TRD Pro trim will also come with a cargo basket on the roof.
The TRD Pro trim is the best off-roading trim and is more capable than the Trail Edition trim. Each trim level will also now come with standard LED headlights. So for 2021, you can basically expect a smoother ride, slightly better off-roading abilities, and a somewhat different look.
When will the Toyota 4Runner be updated?
The Trail Edition trim and off-roading updates for the 2021 TRD Pro model are about all to expect for 2021. Plus, the Toyota 4Runner isn’t likely to be redesigned for 2022, either. Maybe we will see a Toyota 4Runner with a new face and interior by 2023. Until then, Toyota has decided if it isn’t broken, don’t update it.
The Toyota SR5 currently starts around $37k, and the Trail Edition could cost about $39k. Meanwhile, the off-roading ready Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro trim will begin around $51k. These updates are supposed to hold fans over for now, but do you think they make the 2021 model worth buying?
